I am based on a flood defense project in Bury where I assist site engineers on a wide variety of office and site activities from ITC/ITP creation, RAMS & AP creation & creating site diaries. As well as conducting site duties like Setting out and Surveying activities to producing material take-offs to be delivered to site.
I have learnt new skills on site from learning how to use setting out equipment such as dumpy and laser levels as well as regularly using a GPS. In addition to developing existing skills such as effective communication and use of teamwork on-site. In addition I have been given the opportunity to go on CPD courses in future aid my development.
I am really enjoying the programme from being based in Leeds with other apprentices to my current time on site where everybody is friendly and supportive. My day to day job is always different so is rarely boring as you work with a variety of people who help you to develop.
The programme is well organised and structured from starting the job in September with a 13 week period of college to start the first 4 units of the HND. Then after Christmas you start your time on-site where you develop on the job skills before coming back to college throughout the remaining time on the programme to finish your college qualifications.
BAM are helpful and will answer your queries and I feel if I need help I can contact BAM or college. In addition you receive lots of assistance on-site and everybody will provide help if you need it.
Leeds college are very helpful and will assist you to get the best grades possible, in addition the tutors are there to provide assistance and provide feedback on work.
The college work gives you an understanding of certain construction topics but you build on these on the site placements where you can put the understanding into action. As on site you learn how to practically use instruments and equipment to help the creation of the project.
There are social activities on offer such as work does, and other informal activities such as going go-karting. In addition there is often professional events to attend such as forums and meetings.
Yes
I am enjoying my time here as I feel I can further develop through the civil engineering route and know that I receive good support from BAM, college and the on-site teams. In addition the job is never the same day to day to help you undertake a different and various work activities.
Show a good willingness to learn and dedication to learning new skills within the construction and civil engineering sectors. In addition be prepared to work hard at college and at work to get the most out of it as dedication pays off to help you further your career.
