As an apprentice Quantity Surveyor, my role consists of beginning to get a feel of what it is to be a full time Surveyor. This involves starting payment applications, helping conduct site inductions, looking at the BIM software and how it’s applied to help share information within a project.
A couple skills I’ve learnt is the ability to use excel. The use of excel is common to keep data, start payment applications. I have also developed my confidence as I’ve had to help deliver site inductions, where you’re meeting new people, so I now feel comfortable interacting with people I don’t know.
To a high extent I enjoy my programme as this is what I hope to do in the future. I get numerous amounts of opportunities to try new things during my placement, so I get to experience different parts of the project. Also the learning scheme is highly to my favour as they make sure they do all they can to help you.
My programme is well organised as I know when I resume to my training block and when I resume back to my placement. The transition between the two is very flexible and they give you enough time to prepare yourself for what you need to do or have so that you’re prepared for that period of time
I receive a lot of support from my employer. There have been times that I’ve been stuck in my placement, and my employer helps give me ideas of things to do or they get in contact with the placement to give them ideas of things for me to do.
I receive a lot of support from my training provider. They make sure that we understand to assignment and what is needed to be done. Also they give us extra materials in order for us to get a better understanding of the topic and this helps us complete our assignment to a high degree
I think it helps me perform better as I get knowledge of the construction industry as a whole, which I can then apply to my day-to-day work. For example my knowledge of different types of contracts has helped me understand the type of contract my project is on and how this effects how profit is made.
There are a lot of extra curriculum activities that I’ve been involved with at work. Within weeks of joining the team, we managed to set up a five-a-side football team where we play with each other after work. I’ve also been to a couple networking events where I was given the opportunity to meet different people in the company and learn about their roles

BAM Nuttall is a people’s company that looks after their employees. Here you don’t feel left out and the employees are friendly to each other. BAM Nuttall also gives a lot of opportunities for people to develop themselves by doing performance development reviews, where you set your targets and you get given ideas/tasks on how to achieve those targets
Be yourself, know the purpose of why you want to apply to join the company, and be transparent of what you look to achieve or provide for the company. Make sure you do your research about the company’s history as that also shows that you have interest in the company.
