- Junior Instrument Designer - Daily tasks would include, - Drafting/Design of drawings, issuing to DCC, interfacing with other disciplines, drawing research. - Responsibilities; Preparation of design/engineering documentation, Undertake tasks on behalf of Senior/Principle designer, Undertake work in accordance to codes, standards and procedures. - Projects, I have worked on both on-shore and off-shore projects. the first project I worked on (Dunlin Alpha) allowed me to gain some offshore experience during a site visit of which I undertook. I have also visited the Grangemouth site (Kinneal cool down project) and have also had a trip up to the Sullom Voe terminal to gain further site experience.
When I first began my traineeship I had basic knowledge of AutoCAD. Now I can sweep through AutoCAD and Microstation with ease. I have had some hands on experience with various courses through Angus college.
Throughout my time with Amec Foster Wheeler I have been placed within helpful and enthusiastic teams. I think this has helped me grow in experience as I am never afraid to ask questions. I have fairly enjoyed my time at Amec as you have a varitiy of tasks to make your day more interesting.
I feel quite valued within my team, we all work together quite well.
My programme is quite well structured, although it can be a task at times to get onto your apprenticeship courses due to high demand. I think the mentor system would work better if you actually worked with your mentor. It is very hard to keep in contact with your mentor should they work at the other side of the city to yourself. At present I receive advice/training from my principle designer who works beside me on my current project. I think that should you move projects/buildings, you should be allocated with a new mentor within your new project/building.
My tutor form Angus college has provided me with plenty support, always asking me how I am getting on within my course. I do enjoy my visits to Angus college as it gives me a chance to experience hands on training.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have yet to require any guidance with problems, but I would feel comfortable discussing any issues with my manager.
My salary meets my costs well.
There are quite a lot of activities outside work.
Yes
Amec Foster Wheeler is a great/friendly company to work for. I believe I have grown in experience while working here and feel like there is no limit to my growth. I can see many opportunities in the future working with Amec Foster Weeler.
During the assessment days I would advice you to stand out from the crowd (In a good way) Be enthusiastic, helpful and willing to learn. Never be afraid to ask questions should you require assistance. Remember we are all part of one team. I would have liked to have been told what the assessment day consisted of... I had never attended an assessment day before, so had no idea what to expect.
