  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Using CAD software to create 2D, 3D and 4D models, also produce site drawings. I often help with drafting up ideas that are sent to providers of plant which allow them to visualise and do calculations. I attend University once a week to complete my Civil Engineering Degree. Lots of personal skills are naturally developed, a main one being good communication and networking skills.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt to use aecosim which is a CAD software, a 4D software called synchro, the use of FlowForma and digital forms, use of ProjectWise which is where all the drawings and models for the project are stored, and when I have been out on site I have developed basic surveying techniques and learnt the process in creating point clouds.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme, everyday is different and you get to network and work along side with some of the best professionals in their respective fields. I also learn alot everyday, and there is always new challenges to overcome, I often learn many different solutions to similar problems which is useful incase one method doesnt work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured and is suited to us as individuals, allowing us to take time to complete University work during work hours and is, lots of training and support and tasks are delegated in a very structured way at my site.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My manager is very supporting and often organises catchups to ensure we are on the correct path, giving us lots of guidance and support. Also the aprrentices in the years above are very helpful for us. Our group learning manager also checks up on us alot to make sure everything with University is going smoothly.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support form London South Bank Uni is very good, all lectures and content are sent to us along with revision materials and lots of supporting content. The lecturers also record their lectures so that we can watch them back. They are also very helpful in answering any questions you have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Alot of the stuff we learn from the training provider has helped me during my time at work. It is important that the theory gets put into practice and this happens alot with the content that is taught by my training provider, this helps me perform better in the work place.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Our site often has a social gathering after work on fridays to relax after the week at work. We often take part in volunteering on our project, I have been on school visit s and completed presentations on multiple occasions. I have also competed with people on my site in a national rowing competition for charity.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is an extremely good company to work for, they treat there staff extremely well and the benefits to working for them are very good. Everyone I have met withing the company has treated me very well and are all willing to help me develop as an apprentice, it is also a very welcoming company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • Take part in work experience relevant to the field you are applying in as it shows you have a strong interest to have a career in that field. Also a good covering letter is important as it is the best way to express yourself before Costain will get to meet you in an interview.
