My role consists of managing a specific area on site in which I am responsible for from planning to delivering the works on site. The day-to-day basis generally involves planning, programming and delivering the works on site along with a small team of engineers. The key main aspects that I focus on are the production of important documentation such as Method statements and risk assessments and the design side to ensure when constructing on site, it is carried out to the design and to a high quality standard.
I have learnt a number of skills since working in the construction industry but as an engineer, I have learnt to plan ahead and look at the bigger picture in terms of using the programme and understanding the mechanics behind it. I have developed my way of communicating to others (from my peers to higher management) and how to manage others especially moving up a role.
I enjoy applying my experience and knowledge I have gained being on site and putting it into practice when completing various assignments and projects at university. This can include practical assignments/assessments such as concrete testing and surveying. The theory side is also enjoyable when applying my previous experience in the area of that particular subject.
Overall the programme is fairly structured with some support from both the university and employer. Inductions onto the programme was only provided in the first year and having been at the university for almost 3 years, it is expected to jump straight in without guidance every year. In the first year, I also received mentor support which helped me a little and then stopped after year 1 of university.
Initially the first year at university was supported well by my employer but over time, the lack of support and knowledge has been lesser and lesser as there has been a shift at who was supporting the apprentices and graduates over the years. There hasn't been much support either in terms of having mentors or having the guidance with problems at university.
I have received the most support in the first year and it has reduced slightly. Overall, the general attitude towards support between myself and the tutors would need improving but when asked for, it does provide beneficial (In some cases) when looking at achieving high grades throughout my qualification. When this has been achieved, I do enjoy it.
The majority of the work I do within my qualification does help me with my role, this can vary from writing better documents (Health & Safety, quality, commercial etc...) to looking into the detail of a subject that I may have learnt within my qualification so far. This also helps when working on a piece of assignment at university, I utilise my skills and knowledge.
In the past, there has been a number of social activities within the broader team and project which helps to network within the project. I also get invited and actively look for helpful and interesting ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) events which also helps me network and meet new professionals. It also provides me the knowledge when attending seminars and workshops.

Overall, Costain have aimed to give apprentices the best opportunity into the construction industry. I would highly recommend them to people who want to gain highly professional experience and knowledge from some of the best professionals within the civil engineering industry. In turn this will provide a solid platform for the future.
Be honest in your applications and show that you want to have the opportunity to work for a high status company like Costain. Always ask questions if unsure and always challenge the way it is being done to ensure you are getting the right amount of support and guidance to enable your success.
