Now as a 4th year apprentice my day to day role is to ensure that the production line with state of the art equipment is kept running and attend to any technical faults which may occur. Within my job role I complete reactive and preventative maintenance tasks to ensure all equipment is able to run effectively and efficiently as possible ensuring targets are achieved.
Since starting my apprenticeship in 2016 I have massively developed my skills especially working on my core skills in the first year where I got to work on machines such as lathes and mills which I had never done before. Throughout the second and third year I really got to use these skills out in the business whilst also working on vitally important people skills and learning how to communicate with others around the site.
From the start of the apprenticeship I have really enjoyed my time completing the programme that I am on because it allows you to firstly pick up new skills, find what you are good at and then you can really work on trying to improve areas which you are slightly weaker on to become a stronger individual.
From day one of my apprenticeship everything was in place ready for me to start from theoretical class room learning, to learning in the workshop to having my work uniform ready for me to have the best start I could possible. All placements were set out for the second and third year of my apprenticeship so I knew which areas of the business I would be going to.
Support from my employer is there whenever I need it, as I now work in a different department outside of where my training manager is located, I have multiple mentors and go to people if I have any issues regarding my learning or wellbeing, this is taken seriously and the employer will help out as best as they can.
I am extremely lucky that within my place of work we have an onsite training school where someone from my training provider will be so if I have any issues they are there to help. When going through major steps of working towards certain qualifications you gain throughout the apprenticeship they will support you as best as they can and will make sure you have received all the guidance and information before doing so.
By completing my qualifications when going through my apprenticeship I get to pick up and learn new skills which are really useful when going out into the business and being able to use these to make improvements and also assist with my day to day role. It is defiantly essential that you pick up these skills along the way and also work experience to allow you to become suitable for the final job role.
When I got to the third year of my apprenticeship I was offered to complete a HNC which is extra and more than what is required as a minimum to complete the apprenticeship, this allows me to further expand my knowledge that I have worked on in the first two years and learn more for the final two years of my apprenticeship.
Yes
I think BMW is a good company to work for as they look after each individual who works for them and want to get the best out of you, throughout my apprenticeship I have been put on many training courses, getting to learn so much and therefore I would like others to experience this.
Be committed. If you want the job then put everything into it. For the apprenticeship I had to go through a 3 part process in order to be selected for the role which by no means was impossible but they are looking for a keen and willing to learn individual that is going to make the most of the opportunity they are going to give you.
