  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Spend 2 days at college and 3 days at work. Get set a variety of different jobs to do including writing requirements, bug fixing, writing code, and testing. During my time in each placement I will have a mentor who looks after me day to day and checks over work I’m doing. Also we have weekly apprentice meeting with our assessor to make sure our nvq is on track.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes loads. I started the apprenticeship with absolutely no knowledge of software engineering as I was transferred from the shop floor. Straight away I was put onto a Java and database course with an ex university lecturer that works in my team, and went from writing no code at all to being able to do large amounts of code for projects that where being set.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program a lot despite being nearly 12 years older then most of the other apprentices in my year. There’s a great team in the software department that will support me whilst at work and when doing tasks for college. The degree that I’m doing is interesting to.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programs very well structured as it’s in the 5 year of being run as it is now. So they’ve had a chance to iron out any problems that may have occurred in previous years. There’s also a large team now based at the ask academy that ensures everything runs smoothly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots, they are excellent in every area. I previously did an apprenticeship in manufacturing almost 10 years ago and I would say that they’ve come a long way since then. They allow time to do nvq questions, have a great team both in training and in the department so there’s tons of support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again lots of support. Obviously now we’re doing a degree it involves a lot of self study and research. The college lectures are always available either via email or on the phone when not at college, and always available when we are at the college. I’m in my first year though so will see how things go.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It is tailored to software and a large proportion of the first year is based around computers and coding. So I would so it helps me by providing the necessary foundations needed to understand software coding, hardware and electronics which are used within the workplace that I am working in.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are events but I tend not to get involved as I am older and have a family so it’s balancing time. I know in the department I’m in they place badminton quite regularly, go climbing together, and arrange nights out. I have been out with them over christmas.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend bae systems to a freind because it’s one of the best places to work I know of from speaking to my friends in other industry’s. I have worked there nearly 13 years, 12 spent on the shop floor and believe that everything about the place is excellent.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Make sure you research the new and future programs they are working on such as tempest. Also ensure your smartly dressed for the interview and do a lot of preparation as I know they ask quite Afew questions and now like people to present a project that they have done in the past.
