control and instrumentation maintenance apprentice Review

i am a control and instrumentation maintenance apprentice at Torness nuclear power station . On a day to day basis i aid Suitably qualified experienced technicians in maintaining and calibrating the instrumentation and control systems associated with running a nuclear power station., this includes gauges, pressure/level and flow transmitters amongst many other instruments.

Yes, i have developed many hand skills as well as developed existing practical skills, life skills, communication skills and working within a team. I have learned many new skills required to perform the afore mentioned roles within my job: maintaining and calibration nuclear power station instrumentation e.g pressure level flow and temperature switches gauges etc

i enjoy my apprenticeship fully, every day is a learning day and theres never a day i regret applying in the first place. I get to learn new skills and constantly increase my plant knowledge, which only aids me further in being able to complete my job to the highest standard.

It is a well structured apprenticeship. I have completed 2 years training on a naval base in portsmouth. That was followed by 2 years onsite, practical training as well as being allowed for day release to complete an HNC in control and instrumentation, again which further aids my learning and increases

My employer has been very supportive the whole way through my apprenticeship. Everything from when i spent 2 years in portsmouth to my 2 years back on site, i have never felt im unable to ask for any help required to complete my training. All staff across the company are more than willing to offer support and advice if needed

Babcock provided the training i undertook during my time in portsmouth and aided greatly in working towards our qualifications. Due to their experience and training many apprentices before myself they had it down to a tee in regards to how to best get across information and the topics which we were learning.

the qualifications i received as well as the training provided by babock has undoubtedly helped me within my current role/ later half of apprenticeship on site. The training provided by babock is my base/ foundation training which has taught me some of the basics and principles of how control and instrumentation works. Without it i feel id need those two years further training to get to the same level

there are definitely extra-curricular activities to get involved in at my work. I as of yet have not partook in many other than team social events and social activities for Christmas. I am aware there are clubs e.g golf in which people from many departments meet up fairly regularly and play as well as play between them for a trophy each year. this is something i may look to join

eDF energy provide one of the flagship apprenticeships within the UK. the apprenticeship and the training is recognised within the UK as being one of the best and on par or better than others e.g rolls royce. Id recommend edf to work for as they are great to their staff and provide upmost support

i suggest that anyone who is thinking of applying to the edf apprenticeship scheme to definitely go ahead and do so. I was unsure if an apprenticeship was for me prior to applying as i didnt know whether i wanted to "learn" again as i had been out of school for several years prior. The apprenticeship scheme provides a great learning environment with a hands on approach which is great for people who learn with their hands and like to get stuck in.
