As a mechanical maintenance apprentice I am tasked with working alongside qualified technicians maintaining plant on site. This involves rectifying defects, routine maintenance and statutory maintenance. I have to complete a qualification manual and other paperwork to prove I am experienced in those particular jobs.
Yes I have learnt lots of new skills. From skills with hand tools, machine tools, fault finding. Following paperwork and instructions has become a new skill I have developed and understanding engineering drawings and literature has improved also.
I do enjoy the programme. The first two years was tough down at the training complex in HMS Sultan. But since being back on site it has been much more enjoyable and I feel my development has accelerated since being back at station.
There has been some issues where we were a part of a transitional change in the way the apprenticeship was run down at HMS Sultan. There has also been confusion with new qualifications that we must undertake and a lack of understanding at what is required.
Lots of support. Since coming back to site my team leader and apprentice coordinator have been fantastic on keeping me up to date with expectations and targets.
Lots of help. Where realistic, my team leader will put me on specific jobs that I need to do to complete the paperwork side of my qualification.
Yes it will help me, through doing the qualification I have gained more knowledge and experience which will make me become a better technician for the future.

It is a great company to work for, many benefits and the support you get is brilliant. All whilst earning a good wage and constantly learning on the job.
The apprenticeship is a long process but it will be worth it in the end!
