carry out maintenance activities on electrical apparatus and plant on Dungeness B power station. This is done in a team of experienced maintenance technicians, i will work on switch gear ranging from extra low voltage to high voltage. also i will carry out work on batteries and motors. Batteries are done on a weekly basis to agree with the site licence. Motors can be anything from a service and inspection to a overhaul.
due from leaving directly from secondary school all of the skills i have developed through our learning process with babcock engineering academy, in the first two years of the apprenticeship. i am now in my third year of my apprenticeship and i am learning new skills everyday and will continue to grow my skills and knowledge.
i thoroughly enjoy the apprenticeship from every aspect of my work, too all of my colleagues in my team, everyone is very supported of my development. they will always push me to increase everything that i know and any skills that i need to have to carry out any jobs in the role.
there is an in depth structure to the program. the first two years are completed away from your teams at your home site. this is done with the other power stations from around the rest of the country so all apprentices have a base knowledge that is the same. there is then regular training back on site to keep you up to date with all training needed.
i receive support from ll members of my team. my manger is very supportive and i will regularly have progress meetings with him to discuss where i am and what i need to do to improve. my apprentice coordinator is also very supportive as she makes sure i am developing in the right way and achieving my targets at the right time.
i really enjoy the course that i do and it has been made to fit the roll that i carry out in the work place. i have regular updates and meetings with my NVQ assessor to make sure that i a m progressing correctly and in the right way to achieve the qualification
the qualification is tailored to the job role extremely well as every aspect of the course reflects a role in my day to day life as a electrical maintenance technician. all the theory learnt in the first two years of the course is very applicable to the job role i carry out.
our team organises meals and activities that we take part in regularly such as curry nights and golf events. we also take part in charity events such as movember and football matches for prostate cancer which are organised as a site wide event. there are also many people in other teams that play musical instruments like i do and we get together and jam from time to time.
Yes
because it is a great company to work for. it has a great reputation and provides a rare job in a rare and interesting industry that the nuclear industry is. Also you work with like minded people who are very keen on the work they are carrying out and have a passion for their role.
The tips that i would give to any body applying is that they need to have a basic understanding of how the nuclear power station operates. they also need to be interested in the nuclear and electrical industry and like to work with there hands and fix problems as they arise.
