As a network engineer I create and apply configuration to the live network, perform upgrades on these devices and troubleshoot issues. This role allows me to take part in major projects within the business, constantly improving and innovating our infrastructure.
Considerably improved my presentation skills due to the exposure and opportunities I get within the business. Have spoken about the program at a school to students and parents. In terms of network skills, I am very comfortable working on Cisco and Nokia devices. Have performed upgrades on different types of devices, learning how to implement them back into the network successfully.
The culture towards apprentices is extremely positive, every one in the team is seen equally and work colleagues are always willing to help if need be. The workshops and online learning are a nice learning environment, allowing flexibility and open classes, where all students get involved.
I believe the structure is well thought for degree apprentices. Modules are completed once at a time with a 3-week gap in between. I feel very supported with my degree, receiving one day a week to dedicate my time towards it. Regular catch ups are scheduled with skills coach from the training provider.
As degree apprentices 20% of our time is dedicated purely on our degree. My team is fully aware about my studies, and offer help if the module aligns with their skill set. The HR team is extremely helpful if there is an issue regarding our degree. I feel very supported.
Tutors have offered extra materials when asked, and are supportive if you need assistance. Feedback can be requested about assignments.
Core modules are less specific to my role but provide a base skill set towards the subject. On the other hand, specialist modules (which we choose), allow me to further my knowledge in specific subjects, which I can then apply in my role. Putting the theory learnt into practice, in my opinion is the best way of learning.
The company hosts many events for the team and wider department, giving employees insights into future technologies and how they may impact the business. There are many sports clubs within the business, however I am yet to join one. There are many volunteering opportunities within the business for employees.
Yes
I feel very privileged to work in the company I work in. There are endless opportunities within the business. The culture is great, the company is very inclusive and positive. I have got to know very clever and successful people within the business, sharing tips and advice. The HQ is a very nice place to work, having a gym and great food available.
Best advice is to be yourself. Show your passion and your qualities during the interview process and research the business. Respect others and help them if you feel they aren't participating enough in the conversation. Prepare for assessment days making sure you are aware of what is expected of you. Research the available pathways with the degree.
