Project Manager Apprentice Review

Running a variety of projects for the Royal Navy ensuring that ships go to see. Daily admin is necessary as well as practicing project management skills that are taught by the university and applying them in the job. Gaining real life work experience as well as applying theory is key to succeeding in being a successful project manager

I have learnt stakeholder engagement, speaking to a variety of people and customers that have to be addressed in different ways. Having the opportunity to manage projects that are unique to the industry and are a privilege to work on. I have learnt essential project management skills and have been able to apply the theory into practice in the work place.

The programme is very supportive and offers a variety of opportunities to enable to be a better employee by the end of the apprenticeship. The apprenticeship is very competitive in the experience that you gain as well as the salary. The amount of life experience and work experience is varied as you change placement every year, enabling you to gain a plethora of experience in a variety of fields.

the scheme is separated into 5 years. Each year is something different which gives you experience in more than one area of work. Stretch assignments and stem events are available to widen learning and experience. There are regular meetings to discuss things that can be changed for the better and to ensure that the programme runs smoothly.

The early careers team are always available to talk about anything whether work related or not. The team are very supportive and ensure that any problems are dealt with. There are many safeguarding and supportive team members throughout the scheme. Each placement manager is caring and guides you as an apprentice.

We work with the University of Portsmouth who deliver our degree throughout the apprenticeship. We get a day release from work once a week and complete a full day of study. The university deliver 2 units every semester and support you through your studies. They are always happy to take a phone call or answer emails about anything that might be bothering you in and outside of the classroom

By learning what is expected of a project manager in the classroom, you can learn the theory and case studies of why certain practices are better to carry out more than others. Applying what has been learnt in the classroom to the workplace helps you become a better working professional and helps you understand why certain tasks and processes are carried out in business

Every year a big project management apprentice scheme Christmas meal is held where all years meet up after having separate meals to socialise. There are also multiple events throughout the year which offer training and socialising to better network. There are many networking opportunities by signing up to conferences that can take place anywhere in the country with different speakers and businesses discussing a variety of different topics.

Its a brilliant company to work for. Although its not an easy job and there are daily challenges, the challenges are rewarding and are great life and work experience. Every year I have developed skills and experience that I think I would struggle to get anywhere else. They also pay a competitive wage and look after you as an employee offering a lot of benefits.
