  • Working in the Security Operations Team, with a focus on Networking. • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a lot of new skills. Including, but not limited to, Stakeholder management, how to manage your time and prioritize tasks to help complete projects on time. Additionally I have learned lots of hard skills, including the use of various networking and security tools and how to configure multiple network devices.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I definitely have enjoyed my programme so far and feel like it is providing a fantastic opportunity to further my career. The people and company I work with have been fantastic. Unfortunately however I've had a slightly less than positive experience with the training provider, that is outweighed by the overall positive experience in the office though.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My employers part is reasonably well structured and provides a lot of time to learn on the job but also have time to commit to coursework etc. As per my previous comments regarding my training provider; my courses from my training provider have been a bit out of order and not well spaced out. In other words, courses with exams before courses that are meant to help you pass said exam. It was then down to notice me to re-organize these courses.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has got a well structured apprentice programme and I have been moved around some various teams and gained a lot of exposure, learnt alot and took part in various events such as apprentice hackathons. They provide me with the time required to study for exams and complete coursework, and help me spend time with the relevant teams at work to gain more knowledge. If I have ever needed help or support, I've had no doubt at any point that I would receive it from Barclays.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Occasional (monthly) meetings with a skills coach who helps keep us on track for our coursework. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a hold of them but they have always eventually replied. All the trainers/tutors on the courses have been extremely helpful and have always provided additional resources when asked.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification helps provide a good base level of knowledge, particularly around networking and general security principles. Overall though I think the most useful knowledge and experience that I have gained via this apprenticeship has been on the job learning and shadowing people from various disciplines. This hands on experience is more beneficial

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately due to covid-19 this has stopped. Normally however they are pretty active with lunchtime runs and after work 5 a side football. They also hold citizenship events, the occasional BBQ and work party and even coding/developer talks and events. My team also do additional team building events such as escape rooms and going out for meals

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Good place to work with a very friendly and supportive culture. Lots of opportunities to further your knowledge and career, not to mention to get a name like Barclays on your CV. If you're particularly interested in one line of work and you let them know, they will help support you to go down that route.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
  • Research the values, think of times when you have demonstrated these values in previous work/life. Barclays are always looking for skilled network engineers and cyber security professionals so this are good areas to specialise in if you're interested in working at Barclays (Or anywhere else, for that matter)
