Taking part in the standard University Computer Science Course. This mostly includes attending lectures, which cover the course content. Then, coursework consists of programming, or using mathematics to solve problems in your own time throughout the day to complete assignments, which means a lot of freedom. Towards the end of an academic year, exams take place so days consist of revision of course content.
Practicall skills such as programming has improved. Multiple modules in the course have required Java programming. My theoretical skills in mathematics have improved over modules in Mathematical Foundations and Logic and Computation. Communication skills are needed to talk to peers, module leads and course management and thus have improved also.
Taking part in the programme has been a blast. University of Birmingham have provided well with the course material and general support. Vodafone are incredibly supportive and we are able to contact them for assistance at any point. I'm very happy with the course and my decision to take part.
For a course that is relatively new for the company, the programme is very well structured. University of Birmingham know exactly what they are doing on the Degree side of the course and Vodafone have opportunities in several departments and so have placements set up for apprentices to take part in.
Vodafone offer support in the University Degree despite not having an obligation to. There have been occasions where we have been able to contact Vodafone directly for their help in course work and they have provided assistance. Most of the time, support from Vodafone is not required to complete work from the University.
The University of Birmingham provides an immense amount of support for its students which includes direct contact with lecturers, world wide web support, free library access to obtain academic papers and books to assist our work. Overall, the University of Birmingham provides everything that is required and more to complete the course.
Most of the placement roles provided to us by Vodafone are in the IT and Computing sector and so subject matter from the University Degree can be applied directly to the job roles. For example, a role as a Java Developer would utilise skills taught at the University in Java Programming.
The are many activities even on site at the Newbury Headquarters such as the on site Gym. Vodafone also hold regular events at the headquarter that employees can take part in. It is common that teams can take part in online activities as well as physical activities such as sports.
Yes
From my experience with Vodafone, they genuinely care about their employees wellbeing and living conditions. Everyone involved in the company that I've worked with and spoken to genuinely love the company and their involvement. Vodafone makes us feel like we have a greater purpose in the success of the business and are not just playing a minor role.
Vodafone like creative, outgoing minds who care about the success of the company. If you want to work with Vodafone, they should know that you care about their values, and care about their success. Vodafone want people that see their job as more than just a job, and actually enjoy their role.
