Combat Systems Higher Apprentice Review

Standard engineering system management on the busy OPV project, I help the system lead to get the system through the many stages of production, testing and commissioning up to sea trials. I also have college work to complete whenever I have time (SVQ).

Yes of course, I have gained multiple qualifications mostly in IT and learned a lot about engineering principles and the lifecycle on the job.

I have enjoyed this placement by far the most but they can be a bit hit or miss, generally I have enjoyed my time at BAE.

Not particularly, BAE seems to be an organisation when you need to know to work independently and sort your own problems out, it's a good idea in hindsight to promote inventiveness and self-sufficiency but at the time as an apprentice it can be a bit daunting.

Not an overwhelming amount but I know where to go if ever needed help. I actually prefer this because it suits me better as opposed to someone hovering over you.

Not particularly, I think there was a slight mistake made in asking us to do entirely IT qualifications when our job would involve none of this. The most relevant and valuable learning I have done for my work has been on the job.

Do your homework, take your time with the application. At the interview take your time, be yourself and let them know you're willing to learn because they're not expecting a fully qualified engineer to apply as an apprentice so don't pretend to be one.
