I am an apprentice underground cable jointer and I complete training, attention college and get work based experience from already qualified cable jointers. I am qualified to work live under supervision from others. I am completing an svq city and guilds qualification by gathering evidence of work I complete at my depot.
I have learnt a lot of new skills as I came straight from school. I have developed basic skills like working within teams and learnt new skills specific to my job role. I have learnt new skills when it comes to gathering evidence for my portfolio which has also let me develop existing skills like English writing skills.
I really enjoy my apprentice program as it has allowed me to gain lots of new skills and become more confident in a working environment. I have got to do training in over head line climbing of electricity lines which is really interesting and allows me to challenge myself physically.
My apprentice program is really well structured as through tour the year I get a mixture of on site work at my depot with experienced colleagues where I get to learnt hands on new skills and gain my own experience. I also attend college in blocks where I learnt the theory side of my work which breaks up from the physical and practical learning. I also get specific training from the sse training school where I get to develop and learn new practical skills in cable jointing.
I receive great support from my employer. I get 13 weekly reviews with my networks learner team manager where we discuss positives and any concerns as well as set goals for achievements for the next review. They are also on hand whenever I have questions. I also have support from college lecturers as well as managers at my Home Depot.
I revive good support from my training provided by getting all the necessary documents and help when it comes to completing evidence for my qualification portfolio. I receive the right support in order to gain the work and experience on site in order to gather evidence for completing my portfolio.
I feel my qualification helps me in my job role by giving me the correct knowledge and understanding of the theory side of my job while also getting the practical training and experience to combine. By having a better understanding of everything it helps me perform safely in my job role.
There aren’t many extra curricular activities that I’m aware of. There may be some but it just isn’t well enough advertised. It would be good if there was more activities to get involved in, especially more social events as it would be a good way of building relationships with colleagues.
Yes
It is a great environment to work in and there is a wide range of diffrent feats of learning. There is good support systems in place and all of the training provided is well thought out and relevant to the work. There is plenty of space to grow and gain new experience and skills if wanted.
