  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in quality control of microbiology aspects of pharmaceutical manufacture. This involves testing of water, environment and product. My everyday role varies from identification of bacteria, media preparation/ fertility testing, filtration of water samples. In the first year I was on PAT which involved monitoring of manufacture areas.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • All my skills have been learnt on the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • First 2 years enjoyable, last year a lot of pressure to get everything done and development halted due to COVID-19. But have enjoyed presenting my project to different sites around the world.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not very well, not much of a plan for 3rd year, relied on too much as a member of staff, when it should be an apprentice role in which you are here to learn and train/shadow on as much as possible.

    3/10

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Probably below average, QC apprentices seem to be forgotten in the broad scheme of things, no representative, left to our own devices if we have an issue. Line managers don't have much time for development chats.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Average amount. Not really needed much, but the help is there if you ask for it.

    5/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Not much, a few modules have related well to the job e.g. advanced micro. But it is interesting to learn about the broader science in case future jobs require it.

    5/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No sports teams, some AZ inspire for early careers but hard to fit in around work.

    3/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a good company to work for pay wise and good to have on your CV. Other areas seem to be more supported, most staff are nice and easy to get on with in microbiology. The Line management currently is lacking.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
  • Be yourself, have extracurricular stuff and a part time job.
