  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Council ICT Programme Manager. I am responsible for the successful delivery of IT projects in scope, to timescale and budget. I am responsible for a team of 25 council officers. I also have Electoral duties in support of the Council. I mentor and coach my team members.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The unifying skill the the MBA has taught is to the importance of the customer throughout everything we do. The executive coaching was extremely useful on a reflexive basis. The tools to analyse a strategy were of use in assessing our current strategy. The Finance package gave me good insight

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • There were a good mix of public and provite sector employees. This made the course very rich. The coaches were very good and addressed the academic skills quickly. The subjects were covered well. The support outside the lectures was comprehensive. A lot of thought was put in to add value.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The use of technology was well done, it flowed well. All the resources were avaialble. The Course followed a logical progression. There was a good continuity provided by a number of lecturers who taught both skills and topics. All of the topics covered were relevant and applicable to my work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was given a great deal of support. I was released for the period of any residential activities. I was also given time off (20%) in order to complete my studies. The process of applying for it was straight forward and swift. There was a good liaison between both parties.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I could ask the lecturers about specific topics and they were able to assist me both with my knowledge but with some techniques. The skills tutors were constantly in contact with me. The gave guidance and support throughout. In addition I really benefited from the input from the Executive coach.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have already used elements of the Accounting and Finance module to undertake an analysis of the Council's income generating assets. Equally, I used some financial ratios in determining the strength of a supplier as part of a tender evaluation. I have also used internal / external analysis of strategies.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The Business school put on some good networking events. I got invited to attend an event with the Secretary of State. In addition the course put on a number of interest lectures associated with the course. There was an opportunity for me to represent the University at sports as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Manchester City Council to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • You are working in an organisation that aims to make a real difference for the citizens in the City. The organisation strives to offer opportunities for all people. You can also move within the organisation itself. All of the locations are within the City boundaries and flexible working is possible.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Manchester City Council?
  • Get to know the structure of the Council. There is a lot of information available on the internet both on the Council, how it operates and the various departments. It is also worth reading the Council's strategy and the annual City report (this details our progress towards the strategy).
