During my apprenticeship my role involved carrying out scientific research in product development of Unilever products. Over the course of 4 years I was able to have a number of different roles, this involved formulation science, measurement and carrying out experiments and analysis.
I began the apprenticeship straight from finishing school, I was able to develop both technical and competency skills. I have been able to gain further technical skills in actually carrying out experiments and learnt skills in formulation work. I developed team working, communication, organisational skills in managing my time.
I really enjoyed the programme when I was an apprentice. I feel it benefitted me more than going to university by itself. I was able to gain the degree qualification but at the same time gain industrial experience and further my interests in the FMCG industry.
When I completed the scheme I found it to be well organised. There was a clear layout of the scheme and rotations involved. The schedule of University and work was also made clear throughout the apprenticeship.
I found Unilever as an employer to be supportive during the whole apprenticeship scheme. There were many people to turn to: Colleagues involved in running the scheme, Line managers, colleagues and other apprentices, to turn to if I had any questions or needed any support.
I felt like I received sufficient support when working towards my qualifications. Line managers would also be very understanding of upcoming deadlines and/or exams. I also feel like it was easy to talk to other apprentices who had been through the same situation.
The qualification helped me to gain and in depth understanding of chemistry - to degree level. As an apprentice, I felt this helped gain background knowledge, but did not always learn chemistry relevant my role. I also gained lab skills in University I could apply to my role.
Yes there has always been a range of activities, that have allowed socialising with colleagues. On top of this there was always opportunity to socialise specifically within the apprentice network of Unilever.
Yes
The apprenticeship gave me good direction when leaving school. I gained both qualifications and industry experience. Unilever was a perfect company to complete my apprenticeship with, is it global and well respected company in the FMCG industry. I was able to excel in my skills within a supportive, friendly environment.
Make sure you have done background research on the company when applying. When completing your CV/ cover letter make sure to include examples of times you have shown certain competencies. If you can, it can be helpful to practice interview questions with someone you know before an interview.
