At SSE there is a range of different work we can do however the majority of work we do from Slough is Rising Mains, powering flats, apartments for new builds. Also I have been working on Bus garages providing electric vehicle charging points for buses in London. This is what I’m currently doing now.
I have developed a bit more ownership from when I was at school as I’m now doing work that if I don’t do it correctly the consequences are quite bad. Therefore I’ll take pride in my work and ensure it’s carried out the safest and best standard I can. It’s also been good learning to communicate with other people on site as questions are asked to you.
I have enjoyed my 2 years of my apprenticship so far, I have had to quickly adapt going straight from school into my first full time job, however the step has been good and I would recommend to people. I also enjoy the locations we work in London where we are involved in big projects.
On both the employer and college side we have co-ordinators which are there to help us when we need them. This takes some of the weight off our shoulders when we don’t understand something. Sometimes we struggle with college work when we haven’t had the appropriate work for our NVQ’s however our co-ordinators help us out.
SSE is very good for support, we are trusted that if something is not safe then we do not carry out the work until it is safe to do so. Also reviews with our co-ordinators have sections about how we feel at work and if anything is bothering us letting us know we can talk if we need to.
I do think that the college are slightly less understanding than my employer at times as they sometimes don’t understand the situation we’re in with getting some work done however on the whole we do have regular meetings with our co-ordinator to keep up to track on any problems we may have.
I think that this course is the best way to learn our role as electricians as we learn the theory in college as well as putting it into practice on site at work. College gives us the knowledge we will need at some point on site.
I don’t believe there is in our section of the company however can’t talk for everyone. I have been to play football with some work colleagues as well as having an annual Christmas party
Yes
I think out of school the apprenticship is good for developing skills that you will use everyday in life. Also the job of an electrician you’d like to think will always be around. Furthermore I personally like the feeling of being responsible for your own work and getting the chance to complete big projects such as powering the future of London buses.
Don’t be put off by any ideas of what you might have of working on sites, whether that’s fear or not thinking you’ll enjoy is as there is a variety of work through the company of not just electricians. The company encourages you to challenge anything you believe to be right and not safe.
