My role is an Electrician Apprentice, so day to day I work with an approved Electrician and they show me the ropes on installation work, inspection and testing anything from domestic households through to industrial sites. As I started off my apprenticeship I was shown how to do the basics and it was mainly a "Simon says" experience however now I'm much more confident and I'm allowed to be more independent in my work.
I started my apprenticeship as soon as I left school so everything I have learnt have been new skills, not just inside the Electrical Contracting Industry but also an insight into other trades whilst working on sites. It's good to understand the way a site works and the amount of work that goes into it.
I thoroughly enjoy working with the people I do and the work we carry out and I get home every day feeling a sense of achievement as I have usually learnt something new or I'm getting more efficient at the work we are carrying out. Joining this apprenticeship has worked out very good for me and my future.
I believe the structure of my apprenticeship programme is very well set out. I did however have some problems at college due to Lecturers leaving which wasn't the easiest as we had to start again with new ones, however it worked out okay in the end and I completed college successfully.
My Employer constantly checks on me periodically with reviews to see if I am developing but also to check that I am being treated fairly in the workplace. They always talk to me and makes sure I'm doing okay on my Log Book and that things are moving forward - not backwards.
I recieved a good amount of support throughout my college time to get me through all my tests and passing them all too, they tried there best to not let anyone fall behind and to be clear about what they were teaching us. There was only one real incident where they weren't clear about exam dates and the class struggled as a whole to revise in the short time sprung upon us before the exam. This was rectified after we had complained for the final year after, so everything ran smoothly.
I don't personally believe that my qualification through my training provider played much of a vital part in my role at work, we learnt minimal things at college that you then repeat in the work place. The majority of the 'Good' experience you gain is 90% from your work on site, experiencing the way you will be working in the future - this cant be portrayed in the same way at college.
There are no extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work.
Yes
My apprenticeship so far has been very good, I have learnt a lot of good new skills and everyone that I work with helps you through that. SSE as a company also has some great benefits for everyone. One example is that they offer you a sum of money for your driving lessons and as a young teenagers this was a HUGE help towards me gaining my driving license.
You are definitely heading in a good direction by joining the company, they have some good benefits and the majority of the work is interesting and skilled. They will help you through almost every part of your training but also stand back to let you gain more independence so you can improve.
