Technical assembly apprentice Review

As an assembly apprentice I will work around the assembly line four days a week in which tasks vary, for me personally I spend a lot of time working on a project with my manager within my department. Before working on projects I had spend time on the assembly itself to learn the basics of the manufacturing processes.

I have been able to learn and develop many skills from the work I get involved in and from those I work with. Most of those are more technical skills related to the job at hand but also in terms of self development and how to work with different people, for example working within a team or presenting/participating in meetings from which I would not have had much experience of before the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship is what you make of it so for me trying to ensure I can gain the best experience I can and to learn as much as possible means I have been able to enjoy the work I do and those I work with while also being proud of what I have achieved so far.

Overall it hasnt been too bad but there is definitely room for improvement. I think the structure can be inconsistent in times where sometimes things are clear and addressed whereas other times if something is unclear it can take a little while to be sorted or cause confusion in what's needed. This applies to different area but mostly in terms of studying.

I would say that I receive the support I need where needed and am happy with that level of support. If I find I have a problem or need to ask a question then it's very easy to approach my manager and other peers at work to do so. This helps to make me feel comfortable in the working environment.

I find it's very helpful course based support but also that of issues experienced outside of the apprenticeship, this then helps an understanding if potentially then struggling within the college environment.

I think it's very split in terms if knowledge that I take into my work, lots if the theory side create a good base of understanding many things within the relevant industry however I do feel as if the exam board used are outdated, as said before some units are good and have provided useful knowledge however some units we learn a lot about have involved methods which are not used often and definaltey things not used at work. I would say it's not a bad thing knowing such information but can have too much focus in terms of what's relevant to my career where such time can be spent much better.

There are some groups that take part in different activities but is not something I have much involvement in. There have been events that I have attended in which I have talked to people such as school headteachers or college pupils about what I do along with other apprentices. Theres also been times I have experienced different areas of the business where I have been able to meet new people in which others cases I would not have had the chance to do so.

I think that this apprenticeship has given me lots of oppertunities, great experience and plenty of knowledge at a young age which greatly aids my development and future career. Doing the apprenticeship suits those who prefer a more hands on approach and being able to gain a qualification while gaining work experience and being paid I feel has a great advantage over similar industry focused university courses.

Doing an apprenticeship is a big step up from school or college which will put you in a different environment to what you will have been in before. It's important to make the most of the opportunities presented to you by BMW group and learn as much as possible as it all aids you in a future career.
