software test engineer Review

My role as a software test engineer involves testing programs and checking for defects so that they can be fixed before sending the programme off into production. This means that the work we do is very important so that a final product is fit for purpose and does not break.

When joining one the top companies in the world, I had no idea what testing consisted of. I picked up a whole new trade with the support from my managers and colleagues. I developed a new range of skill set with the ability to put this into practice with guidance.

I thoroughly enjoy my programme as it allows me to make mistakes in a safe environment, then learning how to fix these mistakes. I am able to put what I learn into practice and gain real good work in the field. This is an amazing opportunity to build up your portfolio. I would strongly recommend an apprenticeship as it opens the door to brilliant opportunities.

The programme I am on is very well organised with its regular check-ins and meetings which are held monthly to ensure that every apprentice is comfortable in their work. I am always supported by the company but also by my apprenticeship provider. These regular check-ins also consist of work, whereby full guidance is provided to help every apprentice understand their tasks and walk them through their struggles.

The amount of support I receive from my employer is amazing, when joining as an apprentice, we are assigned with managers who are concerned about your work but more so about your health, both mental and physical. They will make sure that you are comfortable with every aspect of your work and if you are not they will do everything in their power to help change that.

When working towards my qualifications, I am regularly supported and given feedback before any work is submitted to provide a high quality of work. When I am unsure of something, my training provider will work with me to figure out a solution, with minimal pressure asserted. I am constantly reaching out to my provider as they are so great at giving advice regarding my qualification.

The qualifications I receive and courses I attend given by my training provider are essential to my everyday work. It is relevant to the work I do and puts me at an advantage as I learn new skills which were not around before. With the knowledge that I gain I am able to carry out tasks using this knowledge and I can be confident that I am carrying out my role correctly.

There are an immense load of extra curricular activities all suiting the needs to and hobbies of everyone. They range from football teams all the way to very regular social events like quiz nights and team dinners out. IBM are very accommodating, so if there are activities which are not currently there but a few people have shown interest, then they are more than happy to start a new activity.

I would recommend my apprenticeship to anyone and everyone, as I have never been happier to work as well as study at the same time. It is such a great opportunity which could be a career of a lifetime. Not only does it provide guidance and support but it also ensures that the right qualifications are achieved with the help of the apprenticeship provider

My biggest advice would be to take everything in and make sure that all knowledge absorbed because you can receive a great amount of insight. It is also important to know that each person is different and their own individual, so try to stay true to yourself and really showcase who you are, because they are so good at working with things you may consider a weakness, but they will help you turn it into a strength.
