  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • An overview of my role would be that I use coding and software to test other target software. This will usually be within a fairly big team and I will have a couple of tests assigned to me and the rest of the team will have the same. When all the tests are done, the team and I will then need to coordinate results and present them back to the client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills. The course that I am on has lots of courses aimed to assist in gaining broad experience in lots of different skills. The company I work for also have a lot of internal courses which are aimed to teach you skills in general areas which are always important. These can include things like presenting, consulting, selling etc.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my program. It has allowed me to get to know a lot of people. These people could be managers, colleagues, other apprentices, and all sorts. I always have work to do whether it is for my project or write-ups for my apprenticeship. There is a strong support line whether it is managers from your project, apprenticeship managers or there are programs created by the company aimed to help you when you need it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is very well structured. As I joined I went into an induction which gave an overview of the company, gave you all the assets needed, and an overview of the apprenticeship scheme. There are all the courses throughout the program preplanned and booked for me to see so I already know when my courses are so I can let my project know.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a massive support network around me from my employer. I have an early professional manager which is there to help me with anything I need to know or do with IBM. I also have a task manager which is there to help me with any questions I have about my project or the work which I do.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a career coach that is provided by the training provider. I am able to contact them whenever I need anything and they are always happy to help about any questions I need answering. I also have a call with them every month where we talk about the tasks I can complete which will go towards my apprenticeship.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification (through my training provider) allows me to see what I need to be able to achieve through my role. It also allows me to learn a lot within my courses which are testing based. This assists me with what I need to think about and also allows me to know the techniques and the technical language.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a social application called slack. This is where all events, activities, and groups will be announced. These can be in apprenticeship communities, project teams, or just with work friends. It allows people to stay in touch. Also, if you want to get involved with something which hasn't been done yet. You have a platform to arrange and announce it.

  • 9a. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend this program to a friend. This is because there is so much to learn and a massive support network around you. There is a guaranteed job at the end (if you pass your apprenticeship). I feel as this is a great way to kick start your career.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • The tips I would give when applying are to do your research on the apprenticeship and company before applying. Make sure it is what you want to do and what you would enjoy doing. I would also say make sure to be confident as what you have to say and think is important and people will want to know what you have to say. Get yourself involved as an employer is always looking for people who get involved include others and work well as a team.
