I work as a software tester, testing an application that is currently in the build process for our client. My testing involves working on new builds of the application, testing it's security, defects, functionality etc using different test methods such as stress testing, exploratory testing and manual system testing.
I have learnt so many technological skills such as basic coding in HTML and CCS, using enterprise tools such as GitHub etc. I've also gained a lot of knowledge in areas such as cloud, AI, quantum computing, cognitive etc. I've developed skills in business such as customer relations.
I enjoy my programme massively, looking forward to coming into work everyday and excited for my future within my company. I learn new skills everyday and have met some amazing people. I enjoy my specific pathway and look forward to progressing in test engineering and seeing where it can take me.
My programme is very well organised. I am on a project which is my 'day job' but then I also attend a lot of training for my pathway and these courses are always enjoyable and intuitive. I know the structure of my pathway and what to expect as I progress.
My employer is great in regards to support. I have multiple contacts if I require any help/support. I am always checked up on in regards to wellbeing and the team have regular calls and contact in order to ensure everyone is feeling included and supported. Any help I need is always available.
I receive a lot of support from GKA, I have monthly meetings with my apprenticeship coach that GKA provide and these meetings always give me support around the programme. GKA provide me with courses that will help me meet the requirements of my apprenticeship and they always ensure we have support around these courses.
I gain a lot of new skills from the courses I attend as part of my qualification and these are transferrable to my day job as they are very relevant to my role and they cover a vast range of scenarios and it is easy to be able to identify where they are relevant to me.
My work put on a lot of social events, we have meetings where we don't talk about work and we have the occasional meal/ day out. IBM put on networking events which are great for networking within the company. There are multiple sports teams available- obviously these events are all virtual at the moment due to the pandemic.
Yes
IBM are an amazing company to work for and I am very proud to be an IBMer every day. I learn so much everyday and they look after me very well in every sense. I really feel a part of something and I have met some amazing colleagues and friends.
Be yourself. Network as much as possible and make a great first impression. Shy away from no opportunities and get involved in the assessment centres. Be professional but do not be afraid to sell yourself on a personal level. Show an interest in the company and the people who work there. Last of all, enjoy it.
