I am a assembly apprentice at Rolls Royce Motor Cars at the goodwood plant, I am currently in my first training year and have really enjoyed it so far. My role involves working on the assembly line 1 day per week at goodwood and then being taught engineering/manufacturing at Chichester college the other 4 days. The course is very well organised and we are given clear expectations and targets that we have to achieve to complete this apprenticeship program. I am really looking forward to progressing with this role and achieving my goals.
Yes I have definitely learnt many new skills so far on the program. College really get us involved in as much practical work as possible which is best as it’s hands on and helps with our work at Rolls Royce. I think I have also improved some of my skills such as communication and team skills. I think the program gives us the best opportunity to learn these new skills and improve as an individual.
The current situation with Covid-19 isn’t ideal but it hasn’t affected our program too much as we are able to complete college work from home, so we are still learning. I am really enjoying the course so far and have learned a lot. Also I am really looking forward to being at work 4 days a week in the next academic year so that I can develop my skills on the job as well as learning the theory work at college.
The organisation of the programme is very good and is well structured. We know what we have to do to achieve our targets and we also have assigned personnel from Chichester college and Rolls Royce that we can contact if we have any issues and a pastoral apprenticeship coach from Chichester if there is any personal issues. I think that the overall communication is good but sometimes can be hard to do so as we have to talk to college and work.
We have a lot of support from Rolls Royce if It is needed. I know who I need to go to if I have any issues regarding work and college. In the current circumstance we have been in regular contact with college and Rolls Royce have been updating us on what will be happening so I feel very supported. When I am at work if I have any problems then I can get support from a more senior member of staff easily.
Chichester college is brilliant when it comes to supporting us as apprentices. We have our main assessors who we keep in contact with regarding our college work and our targets and our apprenticeship coach who regularly checks up on us to see how we are and how we are finding the apprenticeship. Our main assessor ensures we are completing our work to the best standard possible and helps us out if we have any problems.
I think our training at college links in really well with our work at Rolls Royce. Also they keep in touch so they know how we are getting on at college and at work. I think that the tasks we complete at college help out with the skills that we can apply in the workplace. My work at college is all engineering and manufacturing based so this does help overall and definitely will benefit us when we finish the apprenticeship.
I have not fully looked in to the extra curricular activities at Rolls Royce but I do believe there is some. I play golf and football in my spare time so would love to get involved with these with colleagues at work. I have a strong relationship with my other apprentices and we socialise outside of work so I would say I do get involved in them outside of working. But I am definitely going to look into doing more.
Yes
Because it is a very good company to work for as they our supportive and strive for the best and want the best for you as an individual. Also there is such a wide variety of roles you could do at Rolls Royce making it a possibility for different types of people. The apprenticeship program is run for different sectors of the company aswell so a variety of people could apply for a sector that they think fits them best
When I was applying i didn’t have any skills regarding what the role involved so just because you might not have experience in the sector you are applying for don’t let that put you off as the whole point of the apprenticeship is to be trained in that area. I would also advice to look at what the course involves as I think some people sometimes assume because it’s a large company and well known it will be easy but if you don’t enjoy what the course involves then don’t just go for it as it is a lot of work but it is worth it.
