  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a CMDA Apprentice every six months I change placements rotating around 5 placements in 3 years. So far I have worked in Audience TV Content Research, I analyse audience viewing figures and comments, analyse viewing trends and offer suggestions on how to best target audience's, and whether a show could be recommissioned or axed. Examples include; offering up suggestions for Strictly Come Dancing and viewing entertainment pilot shows.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a plethora of new skills since joining for starters, how to work in a professional way adhering to BBC values which I have been taught. Alongside developing collaborative relationships, communication and teamwork skills through engaging with new stakeholders and the wider team. I have also learnt management and leadership skills all in line with apprenticeship standards.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy this programme! Developing so many new skills and adapting to a life balance of work and university from leaving school has been so valuable. Although sometimes a challenging balance at times, the workplace itself is brilliant with support when needed.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The workplace rotations are a fabulous idea and the university provider keep us informed of any upcoming uni days or assignment deadlines. However, i feel it does take time to adjust to the 20% of the job university requirement whilst balancing work deadlines.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In terms of support when you are starting out the induction week is a great opportunity to understand how to access support if needed through; HR schemes online, your placement manager or scheme manager. BBC staff are very supportive in general and take a great interest in apprentice's progression. The team i have worked in have been very welcoming offering me any support when needed. I think on the whole it is important to be proactive when seeking support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I feel again you must be proactive especially from the provider. There is the opportunity to submit a draft assignment in order to improve on your work for the real deadline. There are university days up to a few days a month or so. But in order to achieve the best you can module leaders and coaches must be reached out to as briefs for assignments and feedback can be unclear.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Because i am early on in the scheme i find this hard to recognise how they relate sometimes. But i would say the knowledge and skills i am learning will enable me with better managerial qualities in the future for example; managing and leading skills.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The extra-curricular activities are available for employees if 'seeked' out. For example; lunch time clubs for singing and exercise. There are also societies and a Youth Talent Network that advertises social events. There is a membership available for the BBC Club; access to a BBC bar and gym alongside other opportunities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • This is a brilliant way to kick start your career I feel I learn new valuable skills each and every day. The people I work with ensure I feel I am a valued member of the team rather than simply an extra pair of hands - the culture of the BBC is fantastic. I cannot recommend this experience enough.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Ensure you prepare, prepare, prepare for the interview understanding the role you are applying for and the BBC values are so important! This will ensure you can understand fully what the employer is looking for and what qualities a BBC apprentice should have.
