As an apprentice I undergo training at the Academy to further my practical skills in machining and other forms of manufacture, such as technical drawing and electrical. I also attend university once a week to sit lectures where I study to complete a manufacturing technologies degree, all at The University of Sheffield.
I have learnt many new skills, especially practical based. For example milling, welding and many CAD skills. Also, i have furthered my theory knowledge through attending lectures at University, which makes applying the information easier, as it is done in unison.
I enjoy my programme very much, although it is fairly demanding. The hard work definitely pays off for working in such a high quality workplace. It is interesting and very beneficial for learning how to operate as a team, and apply new skills together.
The course is well organised as it sees that all apprentices flow through the scheme in individual groups, and get as much support and attention as required. The apprenticeship permits time for study nearer exams in the type of revision days, and also demonstrates the importance of following a team structure.
The employer has personally granted a lot of support, as I struggled with maths at first. They provided me with a Graduate mentor who helped me with my studies.
Rolls-Royce and The University help organise study sessions to help learn the theory in conjunction with the applied practical skills, which i enjoy attending to ensure i get as much support as needed.
University studies teach the theory before hand or at the same time so you know what to expect and how to act when performing the practical tasks.
Yes the workplace has an apprentice group where you pay a small fee to take part in extra-curricular activities like climbing for example or rugby.
Yes
The apprenticeship is such a good place to jump-start your career and learn in a high quality workplace.
It is important to learn about the company and understand the company values and expectations. The interview process can seem long but is definitely worth the wait, as the rewards outweigh the process. The assessment days may seem high-pressure and daunting but it is important to be yourself, as Rolls-Royce seek passionate individuals. The on-boarding process is useful and should be use to the maximum, to allow for enrolment to go easily and be fun.
