  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role will be to manage the financial position of the contracts that i am working on including the payment of subcontractors and to run internal & external reports to show the position of this contract. This will also include looking at the NEC contract type of the project to look for ways the company can make more money throughout the project. We will also look to raise early warnings or compensation events throughout the project to benefit the company whether that be a financial gain or a programme extension.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, At JNB i have developed my knowledge of becoming a QS along with what it entails. This starts of by now understanding the commercial calendar for when certain periods of the month require reports for senior staff and for the client. It has also improved my general math / IT skills due to the use of maths daily and using formulas within Excel to improve my IT knowledge. JNB have also put me through training to improve my understanding of the systems we use and why we use them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship with JNB and am grateful of being given the opportunity to show my skill set. Working as a team within a contract is a positive due to all members contributing and working together to solve any problems that we may encounter on site. This also keeps the communication high so everybody understands and knows what is occurring on site and can take the actions away to do what they need to do regarding this.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised as we have block release for college weeks which enables us to travel down to Shifnal and for a week to purely focus on our college work to complete our NVQ and diploma work. JNB also provide employees with suitable training such as paying for us to gain our CSCS card and out national water hygiene card. Work is also delegated down to myself from other QS' and commercial managers for me to help them out along with my normal daily tasks.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My support has been good, even though i have had my mentor leave, the commercial manager who stood in has improved my QS understanding dramatically and also given me the time to go through things i wasn't 100% on even though he will be extremely busy. Everyone within the company is very easy to approach and i don't feel like a burden if i don't understand something as generally everyone is willing to help you.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Learning skills partnership is a great training provider and having completed my admin apprenticeship before hand, i have had two great experiences with them as they are always available to help even if its out of a normal college week. The tutors will also explain the work and go through it multiple times with each individuals if you a struggling to complete and take the time to make sure the whole class understands the work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As for day to day work as a QS i don't believe it has a huge contribution however i don't believe this de-values the course as the majority of things that we learn is site based and is perfect for engineers, which also doesn't hurt a QS to understand these things as it gives us a more rounded view on site and also enables us to understand the construction work, not just the numbers. Having said that we are only half way through the apprenticeship and i believe there is some NVQ units just for QS'.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, we have a 5 a side football game every Wednesday night which we raise money for, and after we have collected enough money we all go for an indian and a drink. The company also does an annual sports day with all the MMB offices going to one area and competing against other offices. Then after the sports day there is a sportsmans dinner with awards which is a great social event with everyone attending.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe JNB is a great company to work for as i am looked after within the company and the opportunities that they can provide for yourself to succeed is great. They offer continuous social events for you to participate to meet people within your office / business and i believe they do generally care about your well-being. I haven't had a poor experience at JNB yet and they do look at your performance consistently so it wont go unnoticed when you have been working hard.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • When applying for JNB i would say to definitely apply for one, and ensure that you look into the job role before you apply as you don't want to start and then not enjoy your apprenticeship. At the interview stage i would just say to be yourself and speak to them with professionalism but also in a chatty manner as at the end of the day the person interviewing is still human as they be just as nervous as yourself. Also asks questions to the interviewer to show that you are engaged.
