As a Windows Infrastructure Specialist, I am predominantly working with Microsoft Windows Server, running on IBM System X servers. I work within a team maintaining the Wintel infrastructure used to run our client's systems. This involves building, maintaining and patching servers and workstations. On a day to day basis, I will cover a huge range of tasks, managing every aspect of a huge volume of Windows infrastructure. I am constantly solving new problems daily, and always expanding my breadth of knowledge. I work closely with other teams maintaining other technologies such as AIX, Linux and the network infrastructure.
I have developed many of my technical skills through this scheme. The training opportunities are endless and there are always new things to learn.
I enjoy it very much, there is lots to learn and I enjoy learning!
IBM apprentices are treated just like any other employee which is fantastic, people don't necessarily know that you're an apprentice and you just fit into the working environment.
It is well structured. IBM have been running this scheme for years and know exactly how to work with apprentices. There are plenty of optional courses available, as well as mandatory apprentice ones.
Limited contact with the training provider as IBM provide this.
You are given a PDM (Professional Development Manager) who will support you with your apprenticeship and time in IBM. They are not directly related with your task manager and offer advice from a personal point of view.
Somewhat difficult financing living away from home, but still a fair salary.
A good social life at my particular location (Farnborough) I think this depends on location.
Yes
Fantastic scheme, great support, amazing opportunities!
Be yourself! IBM aren't looking to see that you have 5 A* at A level - just be yourself and talk about things which are unique to you.
