  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • My virtual work experience consisted of several learning sessions covering soft skills, for example writing emails professionally and formally. I had the opportunity to meet several employees at EY, in particular employees who work in my chosen service line. We were informed about their business apprenticeships that they offer, mainly their assurance and tax apprenticeships. We were given the opportunity to be fast-tracked for these apprenticeships and were told about what the experience day and final interview entails.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • We were taught how to write emails in a professional manner, for example when talking to clients. A brief overview of each service line was given at the beginning of the work experience. Alongside the development opportunities available at EY. We were also taught about how to build resilience and confidence. As well as how to set smart goals for our future and how the process of mentoring works in the work place at EY.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • My work experience was very informative and helpful, I particularly enjoyed the Q&A session with a buddy and the Q&A session with some of their current business apprentices. This was a very well run virtual event, it was well planned and organised given the current circumstances of COVID-19. I enjoyed learning about the different models for email writing (for example CTQR) and how to build up confidence when presenting and carrying out tasks.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • This was not the usual work experience, due to COVID-19. The way that EY organised and structured their Business Academy impressed me.There were icebreakers and energisers to help start each day. The timetable showed careful planning and obviously aimed to equip us with as much information and help as possible to achieve the final goal: an apprenticeship with EY. Members of the student recruitment stayed online throughout to help us with any technical difficulties we encountered.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • On the first day we had a talk from a tax partner who talked in detail about EY and their culture. It is clear that EY is all about the people and how they will support and challenge everyone to be the best they can. We were informed of their values and purpose and opportunities they provide their staff with. For example, staff are given 2 days a year to volunteer in and give back to the local community

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • This work experience focused on two particular service lines, of which we had to choose one (when we applied). I was not aware that this decision was rigid and would be carried on to our apprenticeship choice. I would advise people to thoroughly research which service line is best for you prior to applying to this work experience, even though people who apply to this are only 16 or 17 years old this one decision will stay with you a long time.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • Yes this was a paid work experience. Due to COVID-19 we were unable to travel to offices and so everybody attended a virtual experience over a three day period. We were paid for these three days at a competitive rates (around £6/7 per hour). Obviously being at home I got my own lunch and drinks etc. I believe that this was a fair payment for the three days that the Business Academy lasted for.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes. There were many opportunities to meet other employees, many shared their email addresses and LinkedIn accounts for us to contact them with any further questions we may have. Also, we met partners in the firm, graduates, apprentices and managers so this work experience was particularly informative and useful for building up my own professional network/ connections. We also were able to connect via LinkedIn with all of the other students attending this work experience.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY is one of the Big Four professional services firms in the world. It is obvious from listening to and talking with so many employees that they really care about their people and want them to achieve their potential. The mentor and counsellor system supports this and I feel that this system is proof of their commitment to their people, as well as their people's wellbeing- both mental and emotional. The culture and values have shone through each of the sessions I have attended.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Really research which service line you are interested in before applying to the Business Academy. I thought this was more of an introduction to EY and the chosen service line, but that I would be able to apply for either service line for an apprenticeship. However this is not the case, therefore, I strongly recommend conducting thorough research prior to applying and making sure that your chosen line best suits your strengths and skill set. Enjoy and make the most of this excellent opportunity!
