  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently the Yard Foreman at my Branch and I run the day to day loading of four vehicles, unloading deliveries and picking customers loads for the next business day.In the yard I have a team of four people who I organise the tasks with on a daily basis. I also look after any health and safety issues that may arise in Branch. If we have a live project in the yard I will also run that outside.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The Leap management course has helped me to learn new skills and develop new ones. When I learnt about Insights it really helped me to understand the other members of my team and how they perceived what jobs and tasks they had to complete. My project skills have impreved with the methods we learnt to use on the course to help you complete a project on time and how to consider all the factors you can come across.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the Leap Management programme. Meeting the new people doing the course over the year with me was great as they all came from different backgrounds and nearly everyone who started my course stayed on it until the end and completed their end point assessment. I feel the course was extremely well diversified and I learnt so many different areas of the business which will be fundamental in enhancing my future career within the Travis Perkins group.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From my personal experience I can honestly say the programme was extremely well organised and very well structured over the year of the course. I completed ten workshops, seven were on site with the rest of the group and three were remote via google meet due to Covid-19. I had enough time each month to complete the tasks to the workshop I had attended. My mentor was always there to help should I require it and also monitored to make sure I was always on track.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I felt very lucky to receive a lot of support from my manager and I also had another mentor in the shop to help me with my Personal Development Plan. My manager and I had meeting and discussions on my projects I had to complete and he always guided me the right way and in many cases meant completing a project that my branch and team could benefit from.My mentor in the shop gave me guidance on how to use the Travis Perkins system in greater detail which was so beneficial for me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Travis Perkins pay a lot of money for an individual to go on a management training course and they want that individual to succeed. Therefore I felt the support and guidance with any issues was always there from my Leap mentor, manager and my mentor in the shop. The general attitude in the branch was always positive and their was no sign of negative comments when I was out of branch at a workshop from my team.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification without doubt helps you to perform better in your role but also any future role you may move into.I feel I know more about my industry for example from a project looking at my Annual Operating Profit (AOP) which showed me where our higher costs are but also where we can reduce our costs in the business. On a day-to-day basis something you completed throughout the workshops will help you with a task or situation and you will be all the better for it.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • If we have a team bonding social event I will always try and attend that as I feel it is a good way to spend some time away from work with your colleagues to help bond well together. At my branch they have organised five-a-side football matches and darts tournaments but these are after work and I am not able to attend as I have to pick my daughter up from nursery every week day.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Travis Perkins Plc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Travis Perkins is a national company with many areas to find your future career. The company looks to promote within and if you do well and go on courses to better yourself the opportunities are there for you to progress. The benefits are good and there is a company share save scheme that you can do over 3 or 5 years. I have worked at Travis Perkins for over 6 years and have never looked back.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins Plc?
  • The application process is very straight forward through the Travis Perkins website. You will be interviewed by a branch manager or an assistant branch manager and sometimes by a member of the team that you are applying to work in.Always remember to ask all the question you have in your interview. The onboarding process does not take long as long as you can prove you have the right to work in the UK and have a British passport. The work can sometimes be hard but it is rewarding at the same time.Good luck!
