As a duty manager, I am required to have full responsibility of the store in the absence of a higher manager. I ensure the shop is ready to trade, my team is informed on the plan for the day, inventory is investigated correctly and that any issues within the day are solved efficiently. I also take charge of the waste in the store and manage this section to limit waste.
I have managed to develop my existing skills such as learning more about customers behaviors in the store to learn how to merchandise certain products better. I have gained more on my management skills with more experience in running a team and handling situations where the team need managing and guiding on certain sections.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme as it has allowed me to gain a lot of new knowledge whilst in the same job I have been doing for several years now. It allows me to share my knowledge also with my fellow team mates and expand on knowledge too. The amount of information and support given to me throughout has been excellent.
The programme is very well structured. Due to COVID -19 we are having to meet up with the trainer via video call but all the support and guidance needed is readily available online and I can contact my trainer anytime. The apprenticeship lasts a year where i have roughly four weeks to complete a set amount of tasks then at the end of this time i meet with my trainer again and discuss.
My employer is very supportive, they ensure I have the correct pay given to me every week that I am entitled too. Anytime i need to adjust a shift to be able to study for my apprenticeship or have a meeting with my trainer my shifts are always sorted out straight away and they always take interest in my learning and progression with the course.
The support I receive from my trainer is excellent. They are always on hand with any advice or support i may need with the work I have been given and are also very lenient in time frames, such as if I have had a busy hard month and not managed to complete all the work set they will help discuss what I have managed to learn and help me with the rest of the work I haven't completed.
My qualification helps me to perform alot better in my role because it gives me more confidence in my role and then I had before. I now understand why I do some of the jobs i do and the importance of doing them correctly and too a good standard, This in turn has helped me to strengthen my performance at work.
Our company has a Talking Shop Rep in every store which allows for one colleague to take part in and be a voice for the rest of the store. They also get to have regular catch ups with the area managers and sometimes get invited to special events, We also hold area conferences every where all the areas meet up for a big social event and to recognize star performers from the previous year.

I have worked for this company for many years and have always felt extremely valued in my role. I have been allowed the chance to progress many times and the company are very good at rewarding their colleagues for hard work. We get regualr pay rises every year, christmas vouchers and special thankyou vouchers to every colleague and social funds paid top every store. I have really enjoyed working for the company for the last four years.
I would advise to be confident and answer every question honestly. Use alot of common sense and trust in the responses you give. I would also say to never be afraid to ask questions. Store managers would rather hear you ask the question and get it right then make mistakes by not asking.
