My role as an Electrical Engineer at present involves undertaking investigatory tasks into the nature of electrical problems that present themselves, and finding correct solutions to these by undertaking investigation work (e.g. practical testing). I am also required to use my technical knowledge to support the introduction of new electrical and avionic products into service, and for the evolution of existing products and systems.
I have learnt a number of new skills. Firstly, the ability to be able to see a problem and be able to implement a strategy that is capable of analyzing and resolving this problem has allowed me to conduct some high-level problem-solving, and is something I use on a daily basis. Furthermore, the ability to be able to work effectively in a team environment is something that I have to demonstrate every day.
The programme is thoroughly enjoyable. It gives me the chance to experience a range of different engineering problems and environments, picking up valuable knowledge of the field and doing so in a team environment whereby I am working alongside fellow engineers to achieve an outcome. The programme is well-run, and also gives me the opportunity to develop independence and leadership in my daily roles.
The programme is well organised, and all apprentices are fully aware of their responsibilities and expectations, in terms of daily roles, outcomes of the programme, opportunities available to them to progress as an engineer and whom they have to contact or able to get in touch with and when required. The way that the course is run is conducive to people becoming better and more confident engineers.
The employer cannot do enough for me whilst on the programme. The staff and fellow employees are all friendly and welcoming, and go out of their way to ensure that the resources that are needed are available to you, and most importantly that you enjoy the time with the company. The managers are viewed more as peers, in that they are friendly, open and honest, and make the time on the course rewarding.
The training provider - Yeovil College - are superb in the way that they provide support to all of its pupils. During the recent pandemic in particular, they have ensured an open and honest communication with all apprentices, and ensure that all of our worries are unanswered and problems resolved. On a day to day basis, they provide quality academic support and ensure we are fully equipped for undertaking our course.
The college are able to ensure that the qualification provides us with all of the necessary training we need to excel in our daily role. The lecturers we have are previous engineers within the aeronautical industry, and for our company, and that allows us to ensure that the teaching that we receive is directed to our roles on a daily basis within the company.
The company provides a range of extra-curricular activities. They have a student-led committee that are responsible for engaging with all of the apprentices, provide a range of social and team-building activities - e.g. paintballing, meal nights, sporting events etc - and allows for direction from employee needs. They also run a number of professional networking events where they get people from within the industry to come into the company and talk about their experiences.
Yes
The company make you feel a valued and appreciated member of staff, and they ensure that your daily working environment is enjoyable, fun and worthwhile in your development as an engineer. The programme is tailored to ensure we are able to engage with the course in an enjoyable manner, and go out of their way to ensure all our efforts are appreciated and celebrated.
Do it! I applied for University alongside Leonardo, and ended up choosing Leonardo as my option going forward, and I can absolutely guarantee it is the best decision I have ever made. Having an apprenticeship, and particularly this one, gives you everything you get at University and more, providing real-life experience of the industry, and the ability to work in a team environment to deliver customer products. You won't regret it!
