I am a part of the DCC unit in Yeovil and help to build and repair key composite components on the aircraft made by Leonardo Helicopters.
I have learnt many more practical skills whilst working in the company. Understanding how the materials work, and also improving my communication and social skills with the other workers.
There are lots of different jobs in the apprenticeship, and new jobs come up all the time too. This keeps the apprenticeship fresh and enjoyable. I personally enjoy solving problems, using my skills and knowledge to work out the best way to repair different components.
The support team is well structured. There are varying levels of training managers, which are clearly described, so you know who you exactly to speak to depending on what your question is.
We are always in contact with our managers, and have regular meetings to catch up and review our progress. If you have problems, they are always willing to give advice to help solve them, and allow you to improve in your area of work.
Our training support from the college is good in my opinion. If I have ever had a problem, I have always had a response and advice in how to solve them. They have a good online system to help contact all lecturers, who usually reply quickly
The BTEC qualification gives us a good academic understanding of the materials we are working with, and the mathematics taught allows us to approach problems that we are faced with in an attitude that makes us feel we can solve them.
100% There is an apprentice association that sets up events for apprentices from all around the company to get involved in and meet each other. Additionally there are multiple events around the country that the company gets invited to, where apprentices are asked to go to represent them. Here you get to meet lots of other people and figures that you wouldn't meet if you were not an apprentice
Yes
There are so many different areas within the company, and jobs that you don't know exist. There is always a job there that you will find suits you, and people there that will welcome you and support you throughout.
Work hard in your academic studies, and any external projects or hobbies you do. Showing your work ethic and creativity in all situations will stand you out from other candidates.
