  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm a manager in a supported accommodation service. We provide health and care support for vulnerable people. My job is to run the service, make sure Service Users are treated with respect and dignity, check if safeguarding is in place. I contact professionals, book appointments with GP, psychiatrists, order a repeated prescription for SU, work closely with staff members, communicate with the main office, do supervisions, appraisals, payrolls, plan training, supply office etc

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I developed more self-confidence in my role. I am not afraid of planing the work for the whole team and checking if the work was done. I lead staff supervisions and appraisals meetings with confidence. I constantly look for training that can help me to be a good manager and team leader. I feel my qualification for being a manager are more coherent now.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme quite much, although, I would like to have also the opportunities to participate in more sessions for mangers such as Problem Solving, Managing People, Self-awareness, Building Relationship etc. The Functional Skills online sessions were very efficient and welled and my personal tutor, Julie Parham was very supportive and motivated me to do activities in a timely manner.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My tutor, Julie Parham, was very supportive and always responding for my concerns, questions or providing me with additional instructions or prompts if I required. By regular, monthly sessions she set up goals that I could achieve in a timely manner. She informed me about online Functional Skills session that I could participate and I found them very useful and helpful to improve my English and Maths. The online sessions were very useful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I felt very motivated to take part in online Functional Skills sessions and some of the managerial sessions. This helps me to be more aware of my decisions, action plan and leading supervision meetings. Taking part in this apprenticeship my knowledge is more coherent and based around the English law. I used theory to develop and improve teamwork and knowledge gained on training to run the service properly. I feel more confident in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 pandemic is extremely difficult to have any events. All kind of events were cancelled or radically changed to adapt them to the health and safety rules in the pandemic time. We support the Cancer Research Charity by walks and runs. We celebrate staff and Service Users birthdays within our service. I led staff meetings with the team integration games a few times when it was safe to do so.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Alexander's Supported Living to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The service I work in is small and there is a good, positive working atmosphere. Staff members are friendly and support one another, especially during this pandemic time. The policies and procedures are followed and this is a safe place to work in. The obligations are given according to personal abilities and every one is appreciated for their work. ASL management team is very approachable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Alexander's Supported Living?
  • To keep a positive attitude towards people and work as working with mental health problems can be challenging. There will be good to take part in the training provided by the company as they help to deal with everyday situations and Service Users problems. People who will apply for this job should have hobbies and to be proactive in their work as their motivation has to be the power to motivate Service Users as well.
