Finance junior Review

As a finance apprentice at BAE Systems, I rotate around different departments on several placements. In my first placement, which I am currently based at, I have had the opportunity to shadow my manager and team members. This has allowed me to gain an insight into their roles, and how they fit together to achieve the goals of the team. However, I am also given a lot of independence as I am assigned with tasks that will contribute to the team’s work, making me feel like a valued and important team member. Each work day is empowering with a range of stimulating activities such as team conferences, induction sessions, training programmes and much more. BAE encourages apprentices to widen their skills and knowledge, thus emphasise on attending these different events.

Although my time at BAE Systems has been short, I have managed to build on my existing skills, as well as developing new skills. For example, the company has moved to remote working, due to Covid, and this has allowed me to improve my technology and IT skills. I believe this is vital , especially in a time where technology is advancing and is heavily relied on. New skills I have developed include; understanding how to utilise excel to efficiently work with financial data, communication skills and team building etc.

It may have only been a month since I joined, but I can confidently say that I am thoroughly enjoying my time here. Entering into a global company can be daunting, however ever since joining the business, I have received an immense amount of support. For example, line managers, placement managers, skills coaches, mentors and apprentices all provide their support and you never feel as though you are on your own. One particular aspect I appreciate about the company is how friendly and approachable all employees are. You are welcomed from the minute you enter and are heavily supported throughout your time in the business.

I believe that the apprenticeship programme is very well structured and is continuing to improve. BAE Systems have planned all courses thoroughly to ensure you make the most of your time at the company. For example, your line manager will organise your placements and certify that you feel comfortable by setting up meetings with placement managers, team members and handover sessions with apprentices who previously worked in that placement. You also receive emails invitations to various conferences, webinars and sessions that expand not only your knowledge of the business but also well-being and working effectively. Alongside working, you will have days for studying. Your skills coaches will organise this with your training provider and you will be sent all the resources you need for the course, such as text books and flashcards.

I hold the opinion that BAE System’s greatest strength is the support they provide for their apprentices. You are given various people to contact if you require assistance with anything. Depending on your concerns/queries you can appropriately contact your line manager, placement manager, skills coaches, fellow apprentices, wellbeing/mental health representatives and many more. From my personal experience, I believe everyone is approachable and very understanding, thus you never feel afraid to contact them. BAE Systems values you as a person, therefore do not solely focus on work aspects but also provide support if you need help with personal matters.

I am currently studying my first module with my training provider. Before beginning the course you are sent all your resources needed to cover the module, such as a textbook, integrated workbook, question pack and flashcards. Due to Covid, studying sessions have been moved online and conducted through zoom. This is an interactive video conference software which allows you to easily speak to tutors and ask questions during your sessions. The tutors provide as much support possible and ensure you are confident with the units being covered. Furthermore, you are given access to the training provider website where you can find videos for every unit, knowledge checks and mock exams. I have found these extremely useful, especially when studying from home. The website has an instant, online chat feature which allows you to ask questions to tutors if you are struggling.

I have only completed a quarter of my qualification, however I have found that the knowledge I have learnt is applied in the workplace. It allows me to have a greater understanding, especially during team meetings where specific terminology may be used. There will be links and overlaps between your work and study life. I’m confident that when I have completed the full CIMA qualification, I will excel at work and feel more independent.

BAE Systems provides many extra-curricular activities for apprentices to get involved with. These can vary from smaller day to day activities such as attending webinars or bigger activities, such as Out-of-bound. This is residential where apprentices will spend a week at the lakes and participate in a number of different activities! BAE are passionate about apprentices taking part in extracurricular activities to widen their skills set outside of working and studying.

The reason I would recommend BAE Systems to a friend is because I know from experience that the company keeps your best interest at heart. Furthermore, all the apprenticeship courses are outstanding and will provide you with the appropriate qualification and experience you need.

A tip I would give is to always be confident and pro-active, as the company loves these qualities in a person. Always remember, that any experience you have is still an experience, whether you believe that it applies to the role you are applying for or not. The company looks out for people who have a variety of skills, so don't undermine your experiences. Lastly, BAE Systems look at more than just your grades and qualifications, they favour and appreciate those that can balance work/study life with their personal life and hobbies.
