Currently I'm in a placement in the Air Service Engineering Sector of the business, my role as a technician apprentice is to learn about the Air Service and do work for my current placement manager that will benefit the team I'm working for and also improve my knowledge about the sector. This work also contributes to my NVQ which is the qualification that I am working towards. The current work that I do day to day incudes extracting information about tools from the manufacturer source document and putting it into a knowledge capture.
I have learnt a lot of new skills during my time in this apprenticeship so far this includes, fitting, electrical, and 3D modelling skills have developed. This is due to the first ear of training that occurs in the ASK during the first year of the apprenticeship before you start you placements. These skills often help you in the future as they will contribute towards the work that you do in placements, which will make the work you do in the placements more effective in teaching you about the business
I enjoy the programme that I am doing, this is because of the high quality training that the apprenticeship at BAE Systems provides, as it helps provide a foundation of engineering skills that the work in different placements can help develop and show how those skills are used in a day to day manner in the business. Another reason I enjoy the programme is because of the amount of support that the early careers team and the business provides apprentices.
The programme is very well structured it has a clear layout of the work that we have to complete as apprentices and how said work goes toward achieving the qualifications. Therefore the organisation of the programme is also held to a very high standard as we have to complete all this work under time constraint, the business even offers a support programme if apprentices begin to fall behind to try help them with the workload to maintain there progress on the current structure.
There is an abundance of support provided by my employer, as I mentioned previously that early careers team offers lots of support schemes if apprentices ever show signs of struggling to keep up with work, or struggling with the apprenticeship in general. There are programmes such as safeguarding that offer great support if any problems should arise for apprentices, and there is no judgement from anyone if apprentices do need help from the scheme that the employer offers.
There is as much help as your require as each apprentice is given a skills coach that is available for any questions or queries you may have about the qualification. They are always available to help and guide apprentices to make sure that they are comfortable with the work load being given.
The qualification we receive at BAE Systems helps me perform better in my role as the information that we are learning through college and our NVQ can be applied in a practical setting during the placement rotations that we have. Through having an understanding of the engineering information when working towards the qualification can be applied to help improve working techniques and practices.
There are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved with at work, such as the Lightning Club located at Warton Site where there are many sports halls and football pitches for games to be played. As well as this depending on the placement you are in, there is also the opportunity to join there sports teams as well.
