I am in my final role within facilities management. Day-to-day I work using Revit which is a software used for information management of the building facilities onsite, as well as dealing with contractors on site every day.
I have learnt a lot about individual working and learning due to the COVID-19 restrictions and working from home since March 2020. My problem solving skills have increased, as well as always asking for help from colleagues when required. I also have developed my time management skills, ensuring I work the required hours each week.
I really do enjoy my apprentice programme as I have been able to explore different aspects within the business and gain an appreciation for the different teams within the company, and how the different roles play a part in the continuation of the business. I am excited to finish my apprenticeship in the upcoming month and work full time in my specific role.
My year is the first year to take on EPA, and the company have struggled with how to deal with this, mostly due to Covid causing complications with the external verifier involved. Other than that, the time schedules for the placements and work expectancy is very good and doable.
I receive a lot of support and ongoing reminders are given to employees that there are resources available for all sorts of things; for example, there is assistance available if you are struggling mentally, as well as financially. There are always mentors available also if you are struggling with workload.
If we require support it is important to make it known so they are aware. There are often extra classes available to sign up for if you require some guidance or advice, and they are always positive and reply to emails quickly.
What I have learnt throughout my apprenticeship has helped a lot with understanding the business. Some of the placements I have been in, such as aerodynamics, have applied the theory I have learnt into practice when understanding wing behaviours.
There are usually opportunities available but due to Covid a lot of events have been cancelled or postponed. For example, sometimes there are football/netball charity games, and professional networking events in the evenings (e.g. apprenticeship evenings) and STEM events with local primary schools
Yes
There are so many opportunities available throughout this apprenticeship, I am very glad I got the opportunity to do it. It is a very good company that truly cares about its employees, and the work is enjoyable to do.
Be aware of the company values and never under-sell yourself. Believe in your achievements and it will go a long way. I wish I had been told more about how many different jobs and roles there were throughout the business and to not limit myself when deciding what I wanted to do.
