I am an Aerospace Engineer apprentice and have only recently started, so far my days have been about learning CAD from home due to COVID, while on online calls and given constant help. My day starts at 7:45 and ends at 17:00 from Monday to Wednesday, and I have a college day on Thursday. I have an hour for luck and usually break in the morning and the afternoon.
Yes, in the short time I have been an apprentice I have gone from knowing nothing about CAD (Computer aided design) to being able to make moving objects that function together. I have also learned a lot about BAE Systems itself, and had adequate training for health and safety. I am currently learning Analytical methods and Academic study techniques in college as the first two modules. All in just over the first month of work.
I genuinely enjoy my programme, as it is based around a subject I am extremely interested in (Engineering) and I get to work in a company is at the cutting edge of this industry. All the while I get an excellent salary, work with great people and work in great conditions.
My programme is very well organised, as BAE Systems has a whole team of people designated to training apprentices, and works together with B&FC college. Our whole course over 5 years is laid out before we start, with room for flexibility the choice to specialise. There is also a separate apprentice training facility called the Academy for Skills and knowledge.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. As well as a high salary, I have the option to ask for help whenever I like. I receive all the academic resources I need to be successful in the courses that I am taking. I can also receive help from a human resources department and they supply me with all the IT I need.
I attend lessons with Blackpool and the Fylde college once per week and they give me assignments that go towards my degree. I think there are some assignments we are not initially fully prepared for however we can as for help.
My qualification will be vital for my future role in the company as it will provide the theory that I will need to be able to apply in working environment.
Yes there are, but unfortunately due to COVID I have not learned much about these so far.
Yes
Its a great company to work for, the salary is great and there is no student debt, while still having the benefits of getting a university degree. It allows you to experience multiple different professions and will always be as helpful for you as possible.
Spend plenty of time on the application forms and be informed on what the company does and how it operates. I know several others that applied and none of them got an interview because there are so many applicants for each apprenticeship, so getting a high quality initial application is necessary.
