  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm a civil machinist apprentice therefore I do college and work. We spend half our time learning how to use machines to eventually become a machinist in the company like CNC machines, lathes and manual tools, but we also study courses on the side such as business improvement, engineering maths and science, principles of cnc, fitting and machining, drawing techniques and working in an engineering environment.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt lots of people skills and really developed my presenting and business skills as well as practical skills from using equipment to doing technical drawings.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my apprenticeship its a positive working environment and everyone works well and gets on professionally even if disagreements occur, we all help each other and grow together. The company culture is professional but welcoming and a friendly atmosphere and definitely exceeds my expectations when starting in a positive way

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Really well organised we have a plan of where we are and what we are doing each week that we can access on the daily and through our business courses and college courses we have a well organised routine

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A lot of support we have weekly meetings where we can bring up worries and issues and have access to emailing our ADL (development leaders) if we have any problems that can't wait, we are constantly reassured that we have access to any support we need

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of support we are currently on a Rolls Royce business course and have received a lot of support and also with college we are also reassured that if we have any additional needs we can have them evaluated and offered to us and are made assure by our tutors that if we need anything that they are always available.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that it definitely helps as we aren't just learning the practical skills we are learning more in depth so it expands our knowledge of what we are doing further and allows us to not just get a qualification but to prepare us for business life.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there is a lot of extra curriculars for example there is a football, rugby, netball and running club and also networking events such as a being stem ambassadors where you go to schools and events and inspire and teach children and adults the opportunities in our career

  • Yes

  • Its full of opportunities, through work and outside, and is just a positive, interesting working environment


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
  • That it's an absolutely amazing opportunity, the courses are interesting and involving, the people are friendly and you'll make life long friends. Keep persevering with engineering even if unsuccessful because its an amazing career with lots of opportunities.
