  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I manage a team of 13 people. Providing support in their roles as well as working together to make sales, send goods out to customers. I support the manager in his role and am a back up in case of illness, holiday or other absences. I work on various reports to make sure we are compliant with business regulations and work to make sure that we are following business standards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt time management skills, people management skills and conflict management skills. I have learnt how to stand up for myself in a respectful way but showing my authority with those working in the branch. I have learnt how to be more confident, how to use emotional intelligence and how to motivate, grow and develop team members in my branch.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I loved the LEAP programme. They were flexible with my situation when I was on furlough and my mentor really worked hard to make sure that I was up to date with my learning. The COVID pandemic obviously changed things but the learning wasn't impacted. I felt I could lean on anyone in the team for support, help and advice.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure was consistent - there was a pre-recorded presentation, a call with the head mentor and then a second call to make sure we were on track. There were regular calls with my mentor to make sure I was okay and if I needed any help or assistance. The worksheet that made the break down of each module was clear as was the tasks that we needed to complete.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was given freedom to make any changes I saw necessary as well as support from my manager to make sure that I was completing tasks. I was given time to complete any work I needed to do as well as allowing me to use his office when I needed to present something or needed a little peace and quiet when I needed to complete some work. My mentor is amazing a very helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I was given top support - pre-recorded presentations, access to worksheets I needed to complete my work, I could email my mentor to check my learning and she would get back to me as quick as possible [usually within a day latest] My RD and BM gave me their support as well taking out time to make sure that I was completing work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have more experience in managing a team and individuals. I feel more sure of my self and my abilities as well as how best to perform a task. Understanding the Organisation Strategy and Corporate Governance has helped me to know what direction to take my work and lead my team so that we are hitting targets and doing things according to the laws.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Travis Perkins Plc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • TP are a great company that invest in their people. They look to up skill the people that already work for them so that everyone gets a chance to grow and develop. Although an apprenticeship costs time and money they look at it as an investment rather than a thing they have to do. The fact that they are looking to tailor apprenticeships to the various divisions we have show their interest in growing us.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins Plc?
  • Be honest about your experience - they aren't looking for someone to have all the qualifications in the world they want to know that you are willing to work hard. Don't worry about not knowing - you get a chance to learn and grow. But be willing to be part of a team - the branch becomes a family where everyone works together and supports one another so don't be an outsider. Get to know people.
