My role is and HGV apprentice technician, on a day to day basis this would involve a variety of different jobs everyday. monthly services and yearly services are common alongside with defects for example, split wiperblade, worn brake pads, oil/coolant leaks and so on. Jobs such as electrical faults and major ECU problems also fairly common. Pre delivery inspections are a common job as well as MOTs. My role as a technician is to repair/maintain the customers vehicle is good time and fashion, it is also to find faults efficiently and carry out the correct rectification in the correct manner if the customer is happy for us to do so.
I have developed/gained many skills throughout my time as an apprentice, varying from hand skills to electrical/mechanical skills. Before I started I didn't have much experience aside from the odd job helping a family member with their car, I have also learnt how to work under pressure which was a problem before I started. I can deal with customers in a professional manner as well as give technical advise is needs be, (to a certain extent). I have learnt about the functions of many components of a vehicle and why they are so important in the function of a healthy truck. My time here has taught me a lot which enabled me to work on my own car when I was having problems with it.
I enjoy being hands on overall with the work we do, i also enjoy coming to work as the job itself is not a boring job, From time to time there is a problem i come to a stop at and struggle to figure out the fault but that makes it that bit more interesting. I like the people i work with which makes it better as well. I enjoy going to college as well as i learn about the components of a vehicle and their function, to better this I am also able to carry out these tasks in the college workshop (under supervision). Although the homestay is a little weird as it is not something I am used to.
The programme itself is brilliant, the training is there for me to exceed and if i have a problem i know where i can go to get help. There is information and people to help me whenever i need it. The programme does not only care about the flow of the business as it also cares about the people, the company offers help with personal issues outside the place of work if i am to need it. Overall the programme is good and i am happy with it.
I receive a lot of support from everybody in the workplace when they can help, my mentor also teaches me a lot about the job itself and how to deal with the issues at hand. My manager also checks in on me and my progress often. If i have a problem working on a vehicle there is support there if i need it for example, tech share and RMI. And all this support is a call/email away
They offer modules to complete testing and teaching about everyday problems with vehicles and so on, these modules test our knowledge on what we already know and what we are being taught. They range from electrical problems to health and safety, this keeps us refreshed on our knowledge. My training provider also offers personal development programmes and online classes throughout covid 19 to ensure we are where we need to be at this stage in my apprenticeship
I feel like it does help in a variety of ways, it taught me where to go when i need help and how to get there, the training provided is to push me to be the best I can be, i would say i know extremely a lot more about vehicles and everyday problems then i did when i first started. This enables me to perform jobs in the workplace efficiently, in time and confidently.
There are different events/activities outside of work, i can complete modules online about my work and what it entails. i can also listen into podcasts and take part in different events the company offers, i can also try to win apprentice of the year. There are also news letters about the company and workplace.
