  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work at reception - this means I check people in every day, I help housekeeping to clean, I answer the phones and emails and I basically make sure every guest is happy and content with their stay. This makes taking complaints and feedback to give to the company on the system

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’ve definitely developed new skills and improved on existing skills, like working with the general public, which I’ve done before but it’s a different ball game in hospitality especially working in a hotel. I’ve practiced time management a lot and team work is a major part of the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I’ve enjoyed it quite a lot it’s always nice to learn something new and I’ve always been open and interested in new opportunities so I thought learning more about the hospitality work experience would be a great thing to do and experience, it’s taught me a lot and the details

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think it’s very well organised and structured, my coach is lovely and very helpful, she keeps me up to date and answers any and all questions I ask of her, so from that viewpoint it’s done very well but I would say she helps on that front

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Honestly not an amazing amount, I’m asked every now and then about my progress but she doesn’t keep too up to date with my work so I would say if anything to improve it might be more involvement from higher up, although I do know she’s busy

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A lot of support, she’s absolutely lovely and very very helpful and understanding when it comes to deadlines and fitting the training in around my work schedule especially as I work full time and my schedule isn’t planned in advance so she’s very good with working around me

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It’s definitely given me more of an insight into the workings of this field, it’s let me understand a lot about why things are done a certain way and why we have so many rules within the business it’s been very helpful in that aspect, for sure

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No, but that would be a great idea, especially because we work so closely as a team with housekeeping in every day and reception staff helping them so we’re all very closely related at work. It might be a nice idea to suggest this particularly social events to get involved kn

  • 9a. Would you recommend Whitbread to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it’s so far a great place to work if only because the hours of 7-3 and 3-11 really allow for spare time outside of working hours which is nice. I think whitbread could be more caring of the safety of their staff, for example actively encouraging the managers to keep their staff safe particularly young girls alone on an evening shift

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Whitbread?
  • Being friendly and personable are probably the top qualities they look for when hiring, or at least in my opinion, especially if someone is working on the desk it’s very important to get on and understand guest problems and be there to help them when ever possible so to be friendly is very important
