I am an assistant manager at a busy suburban pub. My day starts with coming in and doing cash checks, followed by a daily stock check on high risk or high value items, replying to emails and enquiries, and allocating tables for the bookings. In covid times I have had to make sure we are compliant with any new guidance.
I have learnt how to communicate better with my team. Previously I had thought that some things about the day to day running of the pub would be uninteresting to the rest of the team, but now I realise that communicating openly and often makes for a more open and honest workplace
I enjoy the chance to put the knowledge I have learnt in my job into practice by explaining by thought processes for certain styles of management, for example. I enjoy the opportunity to sit down and research other areas of hospitality and how they relate to my company, and also because it is a different type of work to what I usually do
I like the lifetime platform for learning, it is easily accessible and provides lots of information. I do wish that there was a further reading section to highlight where to find more relevant information on each topic. I feel like my training provider is easily always contactable which is good
My manager and area manager regularly check on my progress and to see how it's going, and I feel like if I had an issue I would be able to talk to them. My manager is always available to help me with my work if I need something explaining to me
My training provider is always easy to contact and talk to, and goes out of his way to accommodate my busy work schedule to fit in my calls with him. He gives practical advice as well which is useful because it relates it to the real world rather than an abstract idea
I think I will feel a sense of accomplishment when I receive my qualification because it shows that my day to day activities line up with transferable skills. I will also feel more confident going forward if I am up for a promotion or a new job as I have a work based qualification
We do a lot of socialising as a team, and like to spend time with each other outside of work. We have regular team nights out, using golden tickets we have won for high performance. During lockdown we have participated in zoom quizzes which is a light hearted way to keep in contact and nice to see everyone together
Yes
I enjoy working at mitchells and butlers, although the hours are long, I feel that I get a lot of recognition for a job well done from both my manager and area manager, and even the divisional director when she visits our business. I feel that I have a sense of pride in the work I do
Really take advantage of the great training opportunities provided on the train with Mable platform as this can really help your career progression in the company, but also to develop transferable skills that you can use to gain employment outside of hospitality. Also take advantage the apprenticeships provided as they are completely free to you and will help you develop further.
