  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The team and I support over 400 sites to report timely and accurate data related to their operation, which is reported through our global reporting tool, used by various levels of management. A significant amount of my time is spent communicating and liaising with sites, along with their representative Business Unit lead, to ensure any queries or issues are resolved before the reporting period. I also partake in a number of UK based projects and communicate regularly with different functional stakeholders.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have completed a number of internal training courses, outlined as part of the DLA curriculum. These include management courses, project delivery related courses, as well as strategy related courses to support our GoGreen and Diversity and Inclusion agendas. As a result of COVID, I moved into the role I am currently in, and it has encouraged me to develop and create new skills in communication, project management and general behind the scenes data analytics. I have very much enjoyed the increased level of responsibility.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme, my team is very accommodating. My line manager is very supportive of my DLA requirements, ensuring that I produce all the relevant evidence whilst supporting me during busy periods towards deadlines. The work that is required from a degree perspective is plentiful, however positively challenging! The company culture has evolved, even since the start of my programme in 2018. There is now a strong push for Diversity and Inclusion, which is very motivational.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From a degree perspective, the modules required are preset, and therefore very well structured. We are made aware of deadlines and are supported through the programme by our practice tutor. From a placement perspective, the structure isn't so rigid, and the role is typically determined by the apprentice or the manager. I prefer this, as I had the freedom to choose what I want to do, of course with the agreement of my apprentice sponsor/manager.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am supported by the Emerging Talent team who answer any apprentice based queries and provide updates on upcoming changes. They are helpful in answering any of my concerns that are programme specific. My line manager and apprentice sponsor are also supportive, however, I do believe the general attitude varies around the business. I also have a mentor and work buddy who support with project related queries, which is very useful as I complete my final year project.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The Open University are very supportive of my progression, particularly during the pandemic and having to shift into the 'virtual world'. Both my practice and academic tutor are always happy to answer any queries/hold calls when required. I also receive additional support relating to the portfolio platform that we use and general programme queries (E-Portfolio Manager and DHLs Apprenticeship Programme Delivery Manager)

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The programme is designed to be applicable to my role. For example, within the Work Based modules, we study elements of time management, leadership theories and communication. We are then required to apply and evidence these to depict that we been able to apply what we have learnt. The study material in general is thought-provoking and has helped my analyse and evaluate me own performance/ways of working.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • From a work perspective, there have been very few physical social activities that we have been able to do/attend due to the pandemic. However, we have held virtual leaving do's and Christmas quizzes which have been nice to attend. The team have discussed potential activities that we could do when we return to normal. The Emerging Talent Team also hold networking events, which are typically held every year. I look forward to attending these when they are resumed.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The programme provides a brilliant opportunity to gain a degree whilst gaining amazing experience. I believe I have developed tremendous amounts as an individual and can really see how my contribution supports the businesses successes. I believe the challenges encourage significant development, even during the short amount of time I have had in my professional career. It provides a great opportunity to join a global business and really kick start your journey.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • DHL is a vast global business, so knowing all the detail is almost impossible! Having a good overview of our core functions is a great start. During interviews and assessment days, I would encourage applications to be themselves and be confident in their abilities. Remember that completing a degree-level apprenticeship requires tremendous dedication and work ethic to complete modules in a timely manner.
