  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Providing engineering designs and solutions for the temporary works industry, this ranges from 3D models with accompanying demolition sequencing to the justification of working platforms for various plant operations. My job requires CAD, structural calculations, health and safety (mitigating risk) and producing design risk assessments to produce compiled engineering packages for clients.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Everything I do in my job is new skills, I had very little experience with CAD and now I’m able to produce accurate 3D models as part of my work. I am more proficient in structural calculations to design standards which I did not know about prior to my job.

  • The support is unmatched, I have access to all the information I could ever need because of our online archives, the webinars that my company produces, I am on an ICE training course so I have access to their information and courses plus I am a recipient of the company healthcare so I receive support both in and out of work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Support is there if required, I work with people with extremely vast and detailed knowledge so any questions can be addressed plus I find working towards my qualifications a lot easier due to the work that I do day in and day out. There is also a financial incentive scheme for completing qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I don’t think it does at all, I have been working in the industry for 2 years prior to my qualification so I know the necessary information to produce my work however it does give me more insight as to why I produce work in a particular fashion which is good I guess.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a team building once a year which is great but as we are a small business with 4 people in my office there isn’t much place or money for extra curricular activities however there are a few of us that all go rock climbing so it’s not company activities but we do them as a team
