  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I onboard clients onto my employer's systems and meet with them regularly to help provide tax advice which involves research and reading through legislation. I am also involved in tax computations and help companies file their tax returns as well as analysing costs and budgeting associated with each client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my networking skills through meeting new clients and team members across the country. I have also developed my research skills by reading through legislation and applying it to the client's needs. We also have regular training courses which has progressed my technical knowledge and has allowed me to become more confident in my skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as I am in an environment where I can regularly interact with others and learn from my seniors. The programme is dynamic and allows you to be involved in various clients and projects from all across the country. The virtual environment has made interaction more difficult but has allowed me to work flexibly.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a clear outline of the programme provided to all apprentices with regular support from career counsellors and apprenticeship coaches. We also have meetings we older apprentices to ask any questions. Work delegation is well organised, although there may need to be more visibility as work can occasionally come in large hoards.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We have regular inclusivity meetings where we can discuss areas of concern across the wider team and where more focus is needed. Every employee also has a career counsellor who is a direct point of contact with regards to any personal or work problems. Everyone is generally very supportive and mindful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Although we are given days off for college, we are not given study leave for exams which means studying can be quite stressful especially after work. More communication is needed with regards to what is required for the qualification, but otherwise other employees are very mindful of when you have exams and give you less work to do.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is directly relevant to my role as it is accountancy based. For example the taxation modules help with my technical knowledge and allows me to feel more confident in my role as tax advisor. However this may vary as there are different sub service lines of tax so some areas may be less relevant.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The virtual environment has made it more difficult and currently there are very few social activities although this can vary across different teams. Socials were more popular during Christmas although these were limited to team quizzes as it was difficult to meet in person. There are more activities planned when there are less restrictions.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY is a very open and inclusive environment to work in where you feel valued regardless of your role or grade. Busy season can be difficult in terms of workload and exams are quite difficult but are manageable. Everyone is generally mindful and appreciative if you have any further needs.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Make sure to make the most of the experience and network with other applicants during assessment day as you might end up working with them! Never be afraid to ask questions as chances are others are thinking the same thing. Make sure you do your research on the service line you'll be working under and any recent developments in those areas.
