My responsibility in my role increases every day and I have not really had a role that I have carried out on a day to day basis as of yet. I have done things such as business development, where I have helped identify potential new clients and produce an analysis on them and also client work such as correspondence on behalf of the company in administration and then I have produced legal documents, all within my first 6 months.
Yes, I have developed my letter writing skills, excel skills and also my general restructuring knowledge, which was non existent when I first joined. What has accompanied these skills is my attention for detail has become very finely tuned as it is a critical part of the job and has enabled me to make less and less mistakes.
I have enjoyed the programme greatly, especially team social events, where I have got to know members of the team very well and been able to speak more informally, not all just about work! The programme has been a challenge as it takes commitment to balance studies and work but the company culture really makes sure we are able to handle this and have a work-life balance.
Being in restructuring it is less structured than other service lines, so you don't know what you will be doing tomorrow even, however, that was a main reason for joining this service line. Mentoring wise it has been very structured though in helping me set goals and things to try and apply to my work
I receive a lot of support, I have regular catch up meetings with my counsellor to discuss my progress and then just general wellbeing. All managers I have worked with so far have been very understanding of inexperience too and always take time to go over anything and give feedback.
Kaplan have been okay, I feel that they have not catered for the fact that many of us relocate therefore we would love to do face to face learning to meet new people our age and this could be possible if normal colleges' and schools have gone back. However, the tutors have been fantastic and always stay later on calls to talk over queries.
I feel this will be more beneficial in the future as restructuring is so niche there is probably less technical accounting I can apply on a day to day basis, however, my understanding of accounts has helped me analyse data far better than I would have before I joined EY.
The only thing I have been offered to get involved in is specific team social events, however, this is probably largely due to the covid-19 pandemic and so we have missed out on some company events and sports team that may have gone on otherwise, but I do feel this could have been communicated with us more.
Yes
It is very hard work, however, very enjoyable and rewarding and the team community feel is something they won't find elsewhere. I would just emphasise that they do research on what service line they are applying to as they are all so different and it can lead to being stuck in something you are not happy in.
It sounds cliché, but I was definitely myself and brutally honest about myself too, which I think worked in my favour as they appreciated that. I would suggest top really do research and know a lot about the values as it is something we all hold in high regard here at EY.
