As an apprentice I am gaining experience working on aircraft along side qualified engineers. It includes general maintenance for all aspects of the aircraft including engines, cabin and cargo.
My practical and theory based knowledge for the industry and engineering as a whole has improved, along with my confidence for decision making.
I enjoy my time at work and am looking forward to making a career out of it. It is challenging but rewarding and am motivated to come in each day.
The apprenticeship is organised well to give me experience in all areas to help me become an aircraft engineer. Some aspects could be improved but overall it is setup in a successful way.
At times it can be hard for I get the support from my managers as there are a lot of apprentices for few managers. But from BA and the engineers/ staff separate to my programme they are very supportive and help where they can.
For the first year of my programme where I am based at the training providers site, the support is good, but on the second year when you move to the employers site it decreases but is still available if needed.
They teach the theory needed to become an aircraft engineer and it has helped a lot when going to my employers base to carry out practical work.
British airways are involved in a lot of fundraisers for comic relief, but at the moment with all covid related issues there hasn’t been a lot to offer.
Yes
It is one of the most interesting and different engineering industries to get into, British airways offer a lot of opportunities and are a great company to work for. It has been really rewarding with a lot of career prospects within the company.
Try to gain some experience where possible before joining and make sure it is something you are interested or passionate about. Gaining knowledge about the industry and even the airline will help.
